Lake and Park Holding Corp. held its annual steak fry Sept. 19th@ 5:00 at the Union Grove Lake Youth Center. A hard-driving rain storm nearly overwhelmed the charcoal. The purpose of the steak fry is to thank officials of the DNR, NRCS, Conservation Committee, Lake Manager and other long-time friends of the lake for their work in making the lake a viable fishery and economic benefit to the area. DNR Director Chuck Gipp introduced his deputy Bruce Troutman and other staff. Each spoke in their area of expertise. George Antoniou, Lake Restoration Specialist, spoke of the need for restoration of the lake. District Supervisor Greg Van Fosson told how over one half million dollars has been spent on the campground improving the camping sites, water and electrical connections, adding new restrooms/showers plus the new cabin. Fisheries expert Paul Sleeper said the fishery remains stable. He added, “The catfish are really biting now.” Tim Thompson, wildlife specialist, asked for volunteers for next spring to plant 1,000 plugs on the Umphrey property. He also showed the three-year planting rotation plan for that project. Mel Bro, Watershed Coordinator, explained the status of the current project and what conservation projects had been completed. Roger Thompson, Park Manager, announced that a second cabin will be built on “Legion Hill” and that bids have been accepted. Lake and Park members were glad to hear of the upgrades to the park as they will have a positive impact on the economy of the area.
