GMG High School Graduation ceremonies were held on May 19. The weather forced the receiving line to take place inside and the tossing of the caps looked doubtful. But, just as the grads were ready to depart, the sun came out and tradition prevailed. Pictured are 2013 GMG High School graduates tossing their caps high into the sky!
Blake Warren was named Valedictorian. Sara Hinson was named Salutatorian. They were presented a medal by GMG Board President Merle Appelgate.
The Welcome and Prayer was presented by Alix Hesmer. The SOAR students created a Senior Video for all to view. Pictures of the class throughout the years and of each graduate was included.
Class Speakers were Sara Hinson and Blake Warren. Sara focused on the question, "Are we here to celebrate the past or the future?" She noted, "There have been hard times and happy times, but that is over...... now it our turn to shape our life for the future.....we have the ability and confidence.... now it is time to move on and follow the Class Motto...."
Blake Warren stated, ".... graduation is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time... we learned a lot, from how to sew to learning the anti derivative of some function we cannot forget where we came from and the people who shaped us..... there will be lots of changes, but we cannot change the memories. Everything is going to work out... we will always have support. It's time to take that knowledge and do something great."
The Iowa State Bar Association Citizenship Award was conferred to Alix Hesmer. She was selected by the GMG High School Staff for this prestigious honor. Brent Herren, Iowa Bar Association Member, presented the plaque to Alix. She is the daughter of Julie Hesmer and David Hesmer.
Guidance Counselor Mike Pierson presented Awards and Honors to the graduates. High School Principal Mark Polich introduced Board of Education President Merle Appelgate, who handed out the diplomas.
Superintendent Ben Petty presented the Class of 2013. Tassels were turned and the class became official GMG grads.
The Senior Group of Sara Hinson, Autumn Rosacker, Justice Dannen and Andrew Hughes sang, "For Good". They were accompanied by Mrs. Sheryl Mullikin.
Autumn Rosacker and Kayla Karns gave the Closing.
As the ceremony ended, it was announced that the receiving line would be inside in the lower hall because of an intense downpour of rain. Just as the last people were going through the line congratulating the graduates, the sun came out. It was quickly decided that the traditional tossing of the caps would take place outside. In jubilation and triumph, the graduates united for one last time to call out, "We are graduates of GMG!"
