Thursday evening Sherri Walker of Cedar Valley West gave an update to the Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board on how career internships and job shadowing has been going the first trimester. She said that G-R has done an exceptional job with scheduling for internships and students have a minimum of 2 hours to spend with their business host. The internships are for 10 weeks while job shadowing is for 1 day. She said there is positive feedback, both from the students and businesses. One hundred and five students participated in job shadowing. Al Bovy was awarded the snow removal bid for sidewalks at the Reinbeck Campus and the board accepted his 2-year bid of $75/time. Last year Cooley Pumping received the 2-year bid for the parking lot snow removal at the Reinbeck Campus. Athletic Directors Jeff Charley and John Olsen reviewed the 2011-12 Athletic Report. Charley gave an athletic report summary on the expenditures, they totaled $23,550. Activity ticket receipts brought in $15,090. Charley and Olsen also told of some future athletic projects they would like to pursue for 2012-2015, they include new railings for football bleachers, field tarp for football and soccer, new dugouts/benches for softball, new baseball bleachers, new press box for coaches/filmers/radio and remodel the old press box, an all-weather track and an electronic sign in Reinbeck. The board approved the Title 1 application for $43,401 as prepared by Principal Brian Williams. Title 1 money will go towards the salaries of Title 1 teachers, Lyn Purvis and Jane Love. Agreement for G-R students to attend classes at River Hills in Cedar Falls and Bremwood in Waverly-Shell Rock was approved. These schools had previously been AEA 267 schools and are now under the umbrella of the local school districts in which they reside. In the consent agenda, special education contracts were approved with Storm Lake, GMG, and Marshalltown to allow students to attend at these sites. Also in the consent agenda, the board accepted the resignation of Todd Rickert as middle school wrestling coach. Contracts were approved for Scott Kiburis to coach middle school baseball and Danielle Clark to be the assistant high school girls’ basketball coach. Kylel Formanek was hired as middle school wrestling coach. A boys’ soccer sharing agreement was approved on a 5-1 vote with Grundy Center, Aplington-Parkersburg and Dike New Hartford for the Spring of 2013 as long as it doesn’t bump G-R to 3A. G-R only has 15 players. Principal Matt Leeman told the board about the Professional Development day held on October 3rd with all the staff 3-12 working on Common Formative Assessments under the guidance of Principal Williams and himself. Leeman said the Student Tech Committee will be doing their Fall PD session with staff and students on Wednesday, December 5th.  The students have created a Google Site for students and staff to access. This will have information about the students on the team, merchandise that can be purchased, quick keys for troubleshooting and which students to contact for help depending on the application. Leeman said the Tech Committee has been asked to speak at the Regional 1:1 Conference at AEA on November 30th with Braden Heithoff and Kayli Folkerts as presenters and panelists on that day. Principal Brian Williams said the K-12 staff has been working hard on aligning their formative assessments with the Iowa Core. Grades 3-8 are looking to realign their science and social studies programs with the Iowa Core. He said students will be taking the Iowa Assessments during the week of November 12th. Students will take the reading comprehension, math data analysis and science tests required by the department of education. Several board members will be attending the School Board Convention November 14th & 15th in Des Moines. There will not be a work session in November and the November meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m., in Reinbeck.
