30 Years Ago May 12, 1989 Mrs. Gretchen Fulster, Gladbrook, will celebrate her 90th birthday. Daniel J. Kearney, 51, Tama, was killed May 7, by a train in Tama. 40 Years Ago May 18, 1979 The last day of school is coming up next week for Garwin and Gladbrook students. Garwin Community School will have its last day on Friday, May 25, with classes being dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Gladbrook Community School will have their last day of school on Thursday, May 24, dismissing at 2:00 p.m. Karen Rae Culbertson and Russell DeWaine Mercer exchanged wedding vows on May 5. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Culbertson of Grundy Center and Mr. and Mrs. Junior Mercer of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thoms of Gladbrook will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Powell became the proud parents of a daughter on May 11. She has been named Kristine Elizabeth. Kristine joins two sisters, Andrea Lyn, age 6 1/2 and Leigh Ann, age 4 1/2. Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Seda of Hudson, are the proud parents of a daughter born May 11. She has been named Susan Ellen. Grandparents are Mrs. Helen Kirsch, Waterloo, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seda, Gladbrook. 50 Years Ago May 9, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. George D. Chizek of Gladbrook announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathy Ann, to Robert L. Herink, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. V. Herink, also of Gladbrook. Mrs. Mary Helen Wallrich of Downers Grove, Illinois, announces the engagement of her daughter, Christina, to James Clay Bauch, son of Mrs. J. Stuart Bauch and the late J. Stuart Bauch of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Ed McCreery are the parents of a daughter born on April 30. She has been named Jodi Sue. She has two sisters, Wendy Jo, 9, and Julie Kay, 4. A three-car accident on April 29 on Highway 14 north of Marshalltown in which three persons were killed, has resulted in a suit being filed Tuesday in Marshall County District Court asking for $143,000 as a result of one of the deaths. Filing suit was Elmo E. Hasselmann, executor of the estate of Wanda Hasselmann, his wife, against Jack R. Casterline. Friends, neighbors and relatives gathered at the Elmo Hasselmann farm last Monday morning and plowed, disced and harrowed 110 acres of farm ground. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harder announce the approaching May 31st wedding date of their daughter, Barbara Jean, to Duane Beichley. 60 Years Ago May 8, 1959 Last weekend the 31 member Boys’ Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Boyd, and the 31 member Girls’ Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Wood, returned from the State Contest in Ackley with a Division I rating from all three judges. 70 Years Ago May 6, 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Denbow are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday of last week. She has been named Joyce Marie. This is their second child. Following is the account of the automobile accident which happened in Des Moines last Friday evening about 10 p.m. and in which Leonard Dahms, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dahms of Gladbrook was injured. Miss Genevieve Baldwin, 22, of Hampton, was fatally injured in the accident. Bennie Bartley, 22, driver of the other car which figured in the accident was also seriously injured. 80 Years Ago May 5, 1939 At the beauty contest held in the high school gymnasium last Friday evening, Miss Eva Mae Timberlake, was named “Miss Gladbrook” winning over nearly forty other contestants. The second annual marble tournament will be held Monday, May 8, after school at the Gladbrook school grounds. Any boy or girl is elegible to compete for the title won by Hilton Pappas, who will defend his title this year. 90 Years Ago May 9, 1929 A girl was born on April 26 to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Randall of Indianola. The mother is known here as Georgianna Nuzum. Contract for the new school building was awarded to Spencer Construction Company, of Spencer, Iowa, for $32,371.00. The contract for the heating and plumbing was awarded to F. l. Carlisle of this city for $9,914.00. The contract for the electrical wiring was awarded to W. M. Baker of Omaha, Nebraska, for $1,116.00.
