Gladbrook Auxiliary

February 21, 2019
Northern-Sun Print
Iowa has been blanketed with 7 inches of fresh snow this weekend, but this Monday, February 18, was cold, but sunny with little wind and the kids are back in school. The February joint meeting of The Gladbrook American Legion and Auxiliary began at 6:30 pm. Chaplain Joyce Swangel offered prayer before we enjoyed a lasagna supper served by Kay Lowry, Mandy Koester and Jolene Denbow. Lisa Reinhard gave an interesting Americanism report on the opening of the GMG Elementary last fall, Flag Day and Veterans Day programs at Westbrook and her visits to Boston and historical museums in the area as she visits family there. She also received a national award in 2018 for her Americanism work. Each then continued with their separate business meetings. President Jeanne Paustian opened the meeting with the Pledge to our flag. We welcomed Nikki Clapp who told us of her preparation plans for her year as National Auxiliary President. She is presently reviewing applications for National Committees, attending lots of meetings and will be meeting with 14 of the 25 Past National Presidents as they critique next years agenda. We were glad she could squeeze in a meeting with us. It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes. No treasurers report. Jeanne announced that Jordan Sherman, daughter of Jackie Sherman and granddaughter of Lori Rohweder Sanderson will be a third generation member of the family to attend Girls State June 16-21 at Drake. Jasmin Tervin will also be attending sponsored by the Reinbeck Unit. JoAnn Ruopp of the Tama County Tourism Board asked the Legion/Auxiliary to again sponsor the ‘Freedom Rock’ in their pamphlets. Voted to again donate ? of $100 cost with Legion paying 1/2. Jolene gave a report on the committee reports at Mid-Winter Conference at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines, Jan 31-Feb 3. A special guest from the Dept of Veterans Affairs in Des Moines spoke on problem of suicides, symptoms to watch for and what questions to ask if problems are seen. It was mentioned that the Tama County Sheriff has a drug disposal container in the west annex of the Sheriffs office in Toledo to use to dispose of any unused and discontinued prescriptions. The Auxiliary held sewing days on Tuesday/Wednesday, Feb 5 & 6 with 10 helpers each day to sew bags of materials into strips, snip and roll it into balls for the IVH rug looms. We will not have a sewing day this fall. We welcome transfer member, Melva Vint, from the Garwin unit to Gladbrook. Bud Grimmius and Terry Schmitz have replaced the ceiling tile in the Centennial room and hallway. What a pleasant improvement! Icicle lights will be replaced as a memorial gift for Paulette Boerm. Auxiliary members will be painting the bathrooms and bar area with plans to clean postponed until these projects are completed. Joyce and Jolene will call. Our next meeting will be our celebration of The American Legion’s 100th birthday anniversary on Monday, March 18 at 6:30pm. The Auxiliary is hosting a sit-down ham supper served by our Juniors to all Veterans with roots to our community, all our members/spouses and friends. A power point visual is planned on the history of Ehrig-McTurk Post since its charter was issued in 1920. Come and reminisce with us on projects done, floats built and members who have made this Post one of the most active in Iowa. Bring a favorite story, pass the word and join us.
