I wish to express my sincere apologies for forgetting to add Claire Koobs and Bill Hambly to our list of Veterans in November’s newsletter. Claire proudly served in the U.S. Army and Bill in the Navy. Please accept my apologies, thank you! We express our deepest sympathies to the family of Marlene Langbehn. She will be missed, and we will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers. We wish the very best to Kim Heitmeyer on her recent retirement from the Housekeeping Dept. I don’t think she’ll be a stranger, but we will miss her. Enjoy yourself Kim! We welcome our new residents, Joann Mass and Allen Eggers to Westbrook Acres. We look forward to getting to know you and hope you enjoy your stay here.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BINGO!! Bingo originated back in 1530, but was manufactured in 1929 by toymaker Edwin S Lowe. We’ll have a few little extra surprises on the 20th of December to celebrate! Happy Birthday Bingo! We sure enjoy it. Food for Thought – “You can tell a lot about people by the way they handle three things: rainy days, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.”

National Activity Professionals Week is January 20th-26th, 2019. The theme is “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” National Activity Professionals Week is sponsored by the National Association of Activity Professionals who will celebrate their 37th Anniversary in 2019. More information will be in next month’s newsletter.

A note from Dietary If you will be joining us for Christmas lunch or dinner, please let the Dietary Dept. know by Wednesday, December 12th. Thank you!

Housekeeping and Laundry We would like to wish everyone from housekeeping staff, to dietary, to nursing, maintenance, activities, laundry, administrative staff and all families and residents a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We still have a lot of unclaimed clothing so if you’re missing anything talk to Nancy. Tammy, Nancy, Kim, Ruth, Reesa and Brooke

We will not be having the Dementia group this month due to the holidays. We will resume in January. Be on the lookout for the date and change in time. Happy Holidays!

A note from the Administrator: Welcome to December!  We look forward to seeing many friends and family members during the Holiday season!  A friendly reminder that if you are bringing in clothing, etc. for your loved one, please remember to label with their name.  Please let the staff know that the items still need to be labeled if you are unable to do so.  We also want to remind you that if you are not feeling well, please refrain from coming to visit.  We are entering the cold/flu season and would like the residents, staff and our guests to stay as healthy as possible!!  Westbrook Acres would like to extend a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of the residents, staff, families and the Gladbrook Community.  We hope that you have a safe and happy Holiday Season!          Kelly Larson  MBA, LNHA

December 2018 Newsletter This is a reprint of December 2016 newsletter, in light of continuous rising food costs and the need to stay in budget. This article will help in calculating the correct yields of food so you do not have to worry about running out or having too much food. Turkey: The turkey draws the most questions as most people do not cook turkey but once or twice a year. One rule of thumb is each person may consume 1 lb (pound) of turkey. So 15 guests, 15 lb turkey to be bought. Food safety: Do not thaw your turkey on the counter the day before, place in the fridge 3-4 days before the event, either run cold water over the bird until thawed or cook from frozen state. Ham: Ham is different to figure out than turkey. First you need to decide if you will serve bone-in or boneless ham. For boneless ham you estimate each person will eat 6-8 ounces of protein, you will feed two guests per pound of ham. Calculating bone-in ham is 1-1.5 servings per pound. Or use the turkey method, 15 guests equals 15 pounds of bone-in ham. Mashed Potatoes: How many potatoes do I need to serve 10 people? That is the wrong question to ask as there is more than 4,000 varieties of potatoes and the size of potatoes vary drastically. If you are the cook who adds milk, cheese, bacon, ham, herbs, etc this will add into the volume of the finished mashed potatoes. Since potatoes are sold by the pound; you can serve 2-3 people per pound. This calculation can also be figured for sweet potatoes. 15 guests equals 6 pounds of potatoes. Gravy: Why is there always too much gravy? This is a food item that is going to be, at best, an educated guess. As each guest will serve more or less to themselves based on his/her preferences. One could plan on 1/3 cup gravy per person. 15 guests equals 5 cups of gravy. Vegetables: Some serve carrots, others like green beans or any other vegetable. The serving size is about 4 servings per pound of fresh vegetables. A 4 pound bag of carrots will serve roughly 4 people. Here is a little cheat sheet to help you out. Serving Weight Whole Turkey 1 serving 1 lb; raw Boneless Ham 2 servings 1 lb; cured Bone-in Ham 1 to 1.5 servings 1 lb; raw Mashed Potatoes 2-3 servings 1 lb; raw potato Vegetables 4 servings 1lb Gravy 1 serving 1/3 cup; stock Pumpkin Pie 8 servings 1, 9-in pie Happy Holidays!
