Alpha Study

On a beautiful spring day nineteen Alpha Study members traveled to Ivadel Ruth’s Tea Room in Union for lunch. Before lunch was served a brief meeting was conducted by Pat Clausen in the absence of President Pat Goos. The Secretary’s report was read and approved. The Treasurer’s report was given. Pat called for a vote on the changes to the club’s constitution which was discussed at the last meeting. Members responded with a unanimous vote in favor of the changes for the next club year. Pat presented Ranae Fagan with a departing gift as she has moved to Indianola. Chef John Benson of Union prepared the lunch of a lettuce salad, chicken and rice casserole and roll. A choice of white, green or black tea was also served. Chef Benson then demonstrated the preparation of Banana Foster Flambe. Members then enjoy this delicious dessert treat. Chef Benson then shared is culinary job experiences as well as his present catering business which includes educational cooking classes. He shared that he is also a bee keeper and the benefits of using raw honey. Dr. Cynthia Knight, owner of Ivadel Ruth’s Tea Room, told about the non-profit organization she started in honor of her friend and benefactor Don Jordahl to help high school drop-outs earn their high school diplomas. Her organization partners with several school districts who select the students that would most likely succeed in the program. She shared several personal stories of students and the hurdles they overcome in order to complete their high school degrees. The outing was a great way to end the club year.
