GMG Junior and Senior High students began classes on August 18. Principal Mark Polich welcomed students and staff and introduced guest speaker Pastor Mark Keefer. Keefer told the students they were truly blessed to be in a school that has opportunity where they can grow and learn to apply their knowledge. He noted he was a member of a class of 650 students. Students were told, “You are becoming a part of the world while here at GMG. You are in a safe environment that is better than 90 to 95 per cent of the world.” Keefer explained that he works as a counselor at the Meskwaki Casino and teaches a class on harassment. He uses the steps of respond, report and record. He urged the students to show respect to others, “... the world is in a mess and we need you... trust your teachers, and report if someone is harassing you. The students listened in rapt attention as Keefer quoted from his favorite poem, “Desiderata”- “go placidly amid noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence, you are a child of the universe”. He shared “You are special, you are who you are for a purpose. It is a difficult world and in spite of all the problems - be at peace with yourself.” Keefer also cautioned the students to “Be careful what comes out of your mouth. This reveals who you are and what you are. Trust your conscience and trust your teachers.... have a wonderful year and make good memories.” Principal Polich closed the assembly noting that all students in the building will have 1 on 1 computer usage. And “The number one thing we need to have happen is attendance - we need to be here.”
