Dan was born in Marshalltown on January 6, 1951, the second child of William E. and Phyllis (Russell) Dunham. He attended the Green Mountain School District from kindergarten until his high school graduation in 1969. During his years in Green Mountain, he forged many lifelong friendships and developed his talents as a singer, which he went on to employ as a member of local bands during and shortly after college. He also met his future wife, Delores (Michels) Dunham, as a kindergarten classmate at Green Mountain. They were united in marriage on December 29, 1973 and went on to have two children: Timothy Daniel in 1982 and Elizabeth Michelle in 1985. Dan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University in 1976, remaining a member of the ISU Alumni Association and a loyal Cyclone fan ever since. Following his graduation from ISU, he joined the faculty of the BCLUW School District, where he taught first grade for the entirety of his teaching career. He retired in 2010 after 34 years of service, during which he became especially known for unlocking his students’ skills and love for reading. As a professional educator, he was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, and BCLUW Education Association. In the latter, he served his colleagues in many leadership roles, including president, treasurer, and bargaining chairperson. Dan’s dedication to local service continued into retirement, and in 2010 he was elected to the board of trustees for Marion Township. As a township trustee and a lover of history, he worked passionately to restore and preserve the township’s pioneer cemeteries in order to honor the area’s founding settlers. He loved the outdoors, and in his spare time and retirement he greatly enjoyed traveling and camping with his family and friends. With his parents, he and his wife Delores co-owned Dunham Trailer Sales for several years, sharing their knowledge and love of camping with hundreds of families across central Iowa. One of Dan’s final vacations with Delores was the fulfillment of a longtime dream; in January 2014, they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a wintertime trip to Yellowstone National Park. Dan is survived by his wife, Delores; his son, Timothy (Kilee) Dunham and their two children, Cael and Eli of Coralville; his daughter, Elizabeth (Matthew) Newcomb of Los Angeles, Calif.; his mother, Phyllis of Marshalltown; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Steven (Carol) Dunham of Sapulpa, Okla., Timothy Dunham of Greenville, Tenn.; Philip (TyAnn) Dunham of Ankeny, Matthew (Carol) Dunham of Wichita, Kans., and Scott (Kim) Dunham of Caldwell, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his father, William; his infant sister, RaNae Lynn Dunham; and his father- and mother-in-law, Joseph and Lois Michels.
