June 20, 2014

The Gladbrook Auxiliary Americanism Chairman, Lisa Reinhard presented her annual Flag Day program at 2pm at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home on Friday, June 13, 2014. Many residents, visitors, Junior and Senior members attended to hear about the history of our flag and the Washington Monument. Junior members, Sydney Vavrock and Stella Betts presented the flags and the new flag for the nursing home was given to Terri Osborne, administrator by Junior Carlee Smith. Patriotic songs were played on the piano by Sue Koster and everyone joined in singing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and closed the program with ‘God Bless America’. Cupcakes, cookies and homemade ice cream were served to all the residents and visitors to enjoy. The Gladbrook Legion and Lincoln AmVets joined forces and held a homemade ice cream social on Sunday evening, June 1 at the Lincoln AmVet Hall. The fundraiser proceeds are to be shared by the All Veterans Park in Gladbrook and the Avenue of Flags project serving Maple Hill, Lincoln Twnship, Badger Hill, Crystal, Union Grove and Gethmann Cemeteries. These funds are used for flag maintenance and replacing crosses and poles. Bill and Doris Tessau were the lucky winners in the yard flag and pole drawing. We especially want to thank the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for choosing this project for matching funds. Linda Randolph representing the local Lutheran Church is presenting a check to Dick Denbow of the Gladbrook Legion and Memorial Park Committee. We also want to thank the Tama county Beef Producers for their meat donation to this fundraiser and to the Tama County Government Day program. Volunteers can make small community projects successful, but it is the donations and support of everyone that makes it all work!
