GMG High School Commencement Exercises were held in Garwin on May 18. Mrs. Sue Koster played “Pomp and Circumstance” as the 42 graduates entered the gym. Abigail Duden issued the Welcome. A Senior Video was shown. This video was compiled by Senior Jennifer Borota. Photos from the years and a baby and senior picture were included, with a copy available for each graduate. Mackenzie Burt and Logan Burt were Class Speakers and put a unique twist on the traditional. The brother and sister began by recalling the very first day of Kindergarten and progressing with class memories. The duo talked about success becoming real and how your character will lead to success. They also noted that forgiveness is part of good character and it is not the number of friends, but the number of character traits that counts. The prestigious Iowa State Bar Association Citizenship Award was presented to Noah Scheidel by Attorney Bruce Reinders. He is a member of the Iowa Bar Association and noted that the award recipient was chosen by the GMG faculty. The award is very special in that it identifies a senior with outstanding qualities and an understanding of the purpose of citizenship. Scheidel is the son of Tom and Shannon Scheidel. Guidance Counselor Mike Pierson announced the awards and honors bestowed on each graduate. More than $250,000 in scholarships and awards was conferred. An amazing 90% of the Class of 2014 will be attending college. Principal Polich announced Mackenzie Burt as Valedictorian and Logan Burt as Salutatorian of the Class of 2014. They are the children of Darrel and Tammy Burt. GMG School Board President Jim Fleming and High School Principal Mark Polich conducted the Presentation of Diplomas. Mr. Polich announced the Presentation of the Class of 2014 and the students turned their tassels to graduate status. The “Graduation Song” was sung by Senior Vocalists: Caitlin Appelgate, Jennifer Borota, Mackenzie Burt, Taylor Jackson, Summer Langenbau and Dillon Slingluff. Mrs. Sheryl Mullikin was accompanist. Austin Vaughn conducted the Closing. Graduates assembled outside to greet family and friends. The Commencement closed with the time-honored “Tossing of the Hats”.
