We had a great weekend at Drake Stadium.  From Eric Stoakes capturing the state title in the 400M low hurdles to the 4x800 team getting 5th place from the slow heat, it was an awesome weekend for GR Track.  Eric is the first state champion at Gladbrook-Reinbeck since Ryan Harms in 1995.  He also broke the school record set by Shane Arp (1994) with his state championship run. And the best part for Eric is that he has 2 more years left.  He has already made quite a mark on GR Track and Field in two years.  He is very talented and has the ability to do even greater things in the future. The 4x800 team ran exactly where I told them they had to be to place.  Thankfully, it worked out!  We just hit on all cylinders and ran away with heat 1.  Wyatt Swanson had the toughest leg in the relay, as we pulled away from the rest of the field.  Austin Lott really set the tone for us in the leg 2 of the relay.  He ran his best time of his career and held his own.  And Chase and Eric ran like Chase and Eric run.  It was definitely a team effort, but one that was very impressive! Zach Pierce was disappointed that he finished 9th in the shot put and discus.  But he broke his own school record in the shot put and he really didn’t get going on the discus until halfway through the season.  He was in a stacked field in the shot put as well.  He has the ability to have a very special senior season. Wyatt Swanson ended a great career in the 800 with a 7th place finish.  He really ran a strong race on Saturday.  I know he wanted more and a higher finish, but sometimes it is harder than it appears on paper.  Wyatt had some ups and downs this season.  I am proud of how he finished the season on a strong note. The 4x400 team ran their best time of the season, but they didn’t have enough to make the finals.  There were some strong 4x400 teams running on Friday.  But I was happy they ran their best and ended on a positive note. Tyler Bovy ran 20 seconds faster in the 3200 this year as compared to last year, but finished in the same place (17th).  I think this just speaks for the level of track and field in Iowa.  Tyler worked extremely hard the past two seasons to get to the level he was this year.  He wanted to be better and it showed.  He has nothing to hang his head about with his performance throughout the season. I was really proud of all of our kids.  We PR’d in almost every event on the weekend.  It was a great experience for all that attended! Official Results: 4x800 – C. Clark, A. Lott, E. Stoakes, W. Swanson – 8:29.48, 5th Place Shot Put – Zach Pierce – 48’ 2.5”, 9th Place 3200M – Tyler Bovy – 10:31.24, 17th Place Discus – Zach Pierce – 146’ 1”, 9th Place 4x400 – P. Bown, E. Stoakes, W. Swanson, C. Clark – 3:37.2, 21st Place 800M – Wyatt Swanson – 2:02.78, 7th Place 400M Low Hurdles – Eric Stoakes – 55.03, 1st Place Team Placing: 16 Points, 14th Place
