Maxine Mae Starits was born on April 3, 1927, in rural Garwin, Iowa, the daughter of Jake and Emma (Dvorak) Starits. She was raised and educated in the Garwin School District graduating from Garwin High School. On a cool, fall day (November 17, 1946) amongst relatives and friends, on the family farm, Maxine was united in marriage to the love of her life, Howard "Toby" Clough. To this union they were blessed with six children. She began her young life as a secretary at the local grain elevator and then began her lifetime career of being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a member of the Garwin Christian Church and former member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Maxine was a self-taught organist and treasured all members of the animal kingdom. She especially enjoyed feeding and raising her feline companions. She was even known to have raised orphaned raccoons, birds and even an opossum. Left to cherish Maxine's memory are her husband, Howard "Toby" Clough; children: Jane (Roger) Halleck, Ronald (Susan) Clough, Randall Clough, Jeana Clough, and Richard (Shelly) Clough; grandchildren: Todd Pope, Tedd (Dana) Pope, Wendy (Joey) Lang, Troy Sanders and Chris (Christine) Sanders; great-grandchildren: Peyton Pope, Preston Pope, Logan Lang, Noah Lang, Oliver Lang and Olivia Sanders; and one brother, Danny Starits.
