The 2014 track and field season has been filled with very cool, wet weather. Once again, the Rebels saw another week full of the same. Monday, Aplington-Parkersburg hosted the Falcon Relays. Thursday, Belle Plaine hosted the State Qualifying Meet (formerly known as Districts). Both of these evenings had precipitation and cooler temperatures than normal. At Aplington-Parkersburg, the Rebels finished 9th overall. Dike-New Hartford was the team champion with 112 points. The Rebels brought home a pair of runner-up finishes on the evening. Tyler Bovy was 2nd in the 3200M run with a time of 10:40.4, while Blake Kibe was 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 8.25”. The 4x400 team of Tscherter, Bown, Kibe and Clark finished 3rd with a time of 3:51. The State Qualifying Meet held in Belle Plaine was a night of extraordinary cool temperatures and rain. Despite the conditions, the Rebels finished 3rd overall with 84 points. Belle Plaine won the meet with 113 points, while Lisbon finished 2nd with 128 points. Automatic state qualifiers in Class 1A must be state qualifying champions. The Rebels had 2 automatic qualifiers with Zach Pierce winning the discus with a throw of 146’ 8” (this also set a new school record) and Eric Stoakes in the 400M low hurdles with a time of 56.90. Several events performed well despite the weather, with Wyatt Swanson finishing 2nd in the 800 with a time of 2:07.42, the 4x400 team of Swanson, Stoakes, Bown, and Clark finished 2nd with a time of 3:40.04, and Zach Pierce placed 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 47’ 8”. The 4x800 team of Lott, Swanson, Stoakes, and Clark finished 3rd with a run of 8:42. State Qualifiers for the Rebels included 7 events this year: Stoakes – 400M Low Hurdles, Pierce – Shot Put & Discus, Swanson – 800M run, Bovy – 3200M run, 4x400 – Bown, Stoakes, Swanson, & Clark, 4x800 – Lott, Stoakes, Swanson, & Clark. This was an outstanding feat for all of these young men. They have worked hard and withstood the conditions this spring. They have the ability to make some noise on the track at Drake!
