The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted their annual Mothers Tea on Mon., May 12th. Special guests were Dept. President Ann Crawford, Onawa, and Tama County President Jolene Denbow, Gladbrook. They all brought greetings and received a bag of Cracker Jacks and a patriotic pin flower or baseball bracelet made by Rose Russell. Sue Koster played President’s Ann song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” when she was brought to the podium. President Jeanne Paustian opened the program welcoming everyone to the tea on a rainy spring day. She read a cute “funny” about a Grandma and her grandson. A drawing was held for a red carnation corsage decorated with a baseball sticker won by Vera Arp. Rose Russell presented her program on “What’s In My Purse”. She took items out of her purse and related them to a Bible verse and spiritual message. It was also fun to see some of her many unique purses. The Memorial Service was conducted by Chaplain Joyce Swangel with the help of Poppy Chairman Jodi Betts, Jeanne and Jolene. During the service, hymns were sung led by pianist Sue Koster; prayers lifted up, and a poem on Faith read. The Unit lost three members since the last service. They were Linda Frericks, 22 year member, Marjorie Frey, 29 year member, and Mary Raymond a 33 year member. A candle was lighted for the deceased, a poppy placed, and their family members were given a white carnation. Sue played TAPS. The Unit had two Jr. members graduating from high school, Danyelle Foos and Codi Groth. The group saw one of the red, white, and blue quilts made by Katie Grimmius for the “Quilt of Valor” program. These quilts will be given to our WW II veterans. This one was sponsored by the Gladbrook Corn Carnival Corporation.
