Jennifer Lassuy, a junior at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School, will be attending the Iowa Division of Persons with Disabilities 2014 Youth Leadership Forum on the Iowa State University campus July 13th-July 14th. As the title suggests, the Iowa YLF is a five-day leadership training program for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade high school students with disabilities. This program is by invitation only, and only 30 students are selected to participate. Participants demonstrate leadership potential, involvement/interest in extracurricular activities, community involvement, and the ability to interact effectively with other students. The program is also completely free for students to participate in. Most people are unfamiliar with the Iowa YLF program. The forum will share information on choosing careers, the history of disability culture, and assistive technology for independence. Students will also identify existing barriers to personal and professional success and develop plans to deal with those barriers. The goals of this program is to help young people with disabilities become employed and self-sufficient, knowledgeable about resources available to become successful adults, and expose students to professionals with disabilities who are recognized leaders and role models. Another important opportunity YLF offers is the chance for students to talk with state and local leaders about issues that affect them the most. Overall, students will experience opportunities to grow, learn more about themselves and others, and find out what kind of person they can really be. It is absolutely amazing that Jennifer has been given this rare opportunity! When discussing the conference with her, she says she is a little nervous about what it’ll be like, but that she’s very excited to be going! It will definitely be a highlight of her upcoming summer! Make sure you congratulate Jennifer on being selected to participate in this rare and extremely unique experience the next time you see her!
