Art Day Field Trip By: Sadie Walton
May 16, 2014
On April 22, a group of G-R art students, and their teacher, Mrs. Nelson, traveled to Aplington-Parkersburg for an afternoon of art. Alyssa Christopher, Vasya Strohbehn, Braden Heithoff, Alyona Strohbehn, Emily Johnson, and Sadie Walton were all in attendance. When attending the art day, students rotated between three different professional artists. The first artist to teach G-R students was a professional caricaturist. The caricaturist talked to the students about how he makes his art, showed them his airbrush, created a caricature of Braden Heithoff, and even allowed the student to use his airbrush if they would like. The next artist to speak to the students also used an airbrush, but for much more complex paintings. The second artist created commercial art. His pieces were used in advertisements for companies, personal use, and he even had a couple of puzzles. He also allowed student to use his airbrush. The third and final artist that spoke to the students was a potter. He told the students all about his life of pot making, while making a pot. He showed the students how to make several different pieces on a potter’s wheel including a mug, plate, and bowl. He also discussed different types of clay and firing techniques that can be used when making a pot. On the van ride home, all of the student couldn’t wait to try some of the new things they learned from the speakers. All in all, it was a pretty successful art day.
