G-R welcomes Branstad and Reynolds on STEM Tour

Demonstrations by G-R students and teachers were featured during a STEM Town Hall Tour at the G-R High School in Reinbeck. Special guests present were Governor Terry Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Cork Peterson, co-owner and V-P of Peterson Contractors Inc.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. As Cork Peterson stated in his talk, ".... all technology comes from science and math.. don't forget the basics... too many do not really know how to add and multiply. At PCI it used to take twelve hours to lay out a site, now we can do it in a few minutes. We used to set stakes and now it all comes from the sky."

Governor Branstad noted, "The STEM Council was established in 2011. Iowa will grow even more if we have the workforce they need. .This is number six stop of six. The kids are doing a great job of showcasing what they are doing..... I'm excited about Iowa's future."

Featured speakers during the STEM Tour at G-R High School included Governor Terry Brandstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds (both seated) and Cork Peterson of PCI, based in Reinbeck. Mr. Peterson is pictured as he addressed the students and guests noting, “... all technology comes from science and math..”.

Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds said, "When the program began there were 40,000 students participating and in 2014 there are over 100,000." She showed a video that showed the participants range in age from pre-school through high school. She added, "STEM job creation is projected to increase by 16 to 17%, while other jobs are at 9%. STEM is a ticket to a great future. Gladbrook -Reinbeck is setting a great example."

Following the speeches, the high school students and guests were invited to check out the displays set up by various teachers and students. It was obvious to this reporter when discussing the display topics with the students, STEM is truly challenging the participants. How many would think of designing a shoe for those who "toe-in" or what happens when you add various ingredients along with yeast or computer simulation or infusion osmosis. And do not forget the Rube Goldberg Machine - takes a lot of steps do do something really simple.
