May 1, 2014

To help spread the message of Soil and Water Stewardship Week, April 27 through May 4, the Tama Soil & Water Conservation District recently held a grocery sack decorating contest in local schools. The activity was open to third, fourth and fifth grade students in the schools which chose to participate: Dysart-Geneseo, North Tama, Meskwaki Settlement, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, South Tama and Green Mountain-Garwin. 334 students created contest entries. This year’s theme is “Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil.” It emphasizes that soil is made of life and soil makes life. The district’s overall winner is fourth grader Calia Clubb of North Tama Elementary. She won $10 and will be treated to an airplane ride over Tama County sometime this summer. Her pilot will be Garry Brandenburg, retired Marshall County Conservation Board Director. $5 winners of their schools’ grade levels included Dalaney Slifer-Dew, third, Sylvana Ellenberger, fourth, and Dylan Danielsen, fifth, from Gladbrook-Reinbeck; Aiyanna Stacey, third grade, Geanna Bear, fourth grade, and Nina Jean Seymour, fifth grade, at Meskwaki School; Ryan Reifenstahl, a third grader and Alexa Weber, a fourth grader, at Dysart-Geneseo; Dylan Rohlfsen, fifth grade, of North Tama; and Noah Teske, a third grader at Green Mountain-Garwin. Congratulations to all the winners! Look for the students’ art work sharing the message of watersheds on renewable paper grocery sacks at the following stores: Terry’s Food Center in Dysart, Traer Supermarket in Traer, Hometown Foods in Gladbrook, Trunck’s in Reinbeck, HyVee in Marshalltown and Fareway in Toledo. “Thank you!” to these stores for their sack donations. Thanks for supporting Soil and Water Stewardship Week also go to the students and local schools who participated!
