On April 16, 2014, the Gladbrook United Methodist met to begin their 2014 year. The hostesses were Bonnie Murty and Pauline Flamme. Twelve members and a guest were in attendance. The district UMW treasurer, Kris Stewart from Waterloo First Methodist told us about the prayer calendar quoting from chapters Isaiah and John. Joyce Bruene, Carolyn Moe and Kay Lowry presented a program on “Missions” from the UMW program year book. Joyce told us that in the early days women of the Bible gave support to Missions. A video was used to explain the Ways of Giving. There are five channels in which women can support “Missions” 1. Special Missions Recognition 2. Gift to Missions 3. World Thank Offering 4. Gift of Memory 5. Designating of Giving Kay filled in a cloud as we told her what we did within our unit. This list is being displayed in fellowship hall for the coming weeks for others to see. June Klinefelter opened the meeting with roll call with each telling about their first date. Pauline Flamme read the minutes from the December 18, 2013 meeting. No corrections were made and the minutes passed as read. Correspondence was read from Howard Lynch, Martha Gamble, Dan, Sam, & Beau DeWitt and Lucy DeWitt. Marcy gave a treasurer’s report. Barbara Strohbehn gave a report about the photo album given to Bruce Appelgate as a part of Mary Appelgate’s memorial. June passed a sign-up sheet for the May Breakfast. Wally Paige, a retired Methodist minister living in Marshalltown will give the program, “Human Trafficking” He serves on the conference laity committee. When the UMW had their Senior Citizens dinner in March, the Carson family gave the entertainment around church hymns. They refused any money for services or mileage. Marcy Knaack made a motion to send the designated money to the conference Mission Giving. The group discussed and voted. Motion passed. June brought up about the coming July meeting. Last year it was a picnic. It was suggested that the group might go on a road trip to Lansing, Horsefall this year. At the May meeting there will be more definite plans discussed. June lead the group in closing with the “Lord’s Prayer.”
