GMG High School Jazz Band I will compete at the Iowa Jazz Championships on April 8. The contest will be held at the Iowa Events Center at Veterans Auditorium with performance time at 8:30 a.m. In January the band competed during the High School Music Association Jazz Festival held in Marshalltown. The band received a I rating from all three judges. During the Coe College Jazz Summit the band placed second. The NEIBA District Jazz Contest held at Hudson on March 8 found the group placing third. Fifteen bands in each class are invited to compete at the Iowa Jazz Championships. Two bands were selected from each of the districts to advance to state. Three other bands receive a wild card invitation. GMG received a wildcard invite by placing third at the District Jazz Contest and because the group beat an automatic qualifier from another district at the Coe event. Jazz Band I has 18 members and is directed by Mr. Dan Lastovka.
