The Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School Spring Speech Showcase was held on Friday, March 7th and Sunday, March 9th! This performance displayed dozens of acts that GR Speech kids have been preparing since November. Speech is an organization that is very misunderstood amongst the public. Most people assume that students are literally memorizing and reciting speeches in front of a judge. Though some events involve giving speeches, many people are surprised to see the diverse events that Speech has to offer. The Speech Showcase educates the public about the IHSSA organization and offers students the opportunity to show off all their hard work that goes unnoticed. Friday’s show included these events: Musical Theater, “Company” by Steven Sondheim: performed by Carley Crozier, Hanna Christopher, Elise Peterson, Cydney Rose, Jenny Schildroth, and Aaron Shouse (Large Group State Contest performer) Expository Address, “Unfortunate Disorders” by Sadie Walton: performed by Sadie Walton (Individual State Contest performer; Individual AllState Festival performer) Choral Reading, “Words in the Dust” by Trent Reedy: performed by Alyssa Christopher, Hanna Christopher, Chase Clark, Amanda Grunklee, Moriah Hoeppner, Jenna Hoffman, Sasha Nagle, Daniel Robinett, Mikayla Saak, Ashley Sieh, Alyona Strohbehn, Kathryn Wild, and Shelby Yates (Large Group State Contest performer) Ensemble Acting, “The Staggering Heartbreak of Jasmine Merriweather” by Don Zolidis: performed by Emily Goodenbour and Kaitlin Mohlis Solo Musical Theater, “I’m Not Afraid of Anything” from Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown: performed by Hanna Christopher (Individual State Contest performer) Group Improvisation: performed by Alyssa Christopher and Sadie Walton (Large Group State Contest performer; Large Group AllState Festival performer) Short Film, “Power Up!” by Braden Heithoff: performed by Bryce Clark, Chase Clark, Braden Heithoff, Joey Linder, Tyler Pierce, Daniel Robinett, Aaron Schouse, Dmitriy Strohbehn, Tyler Wrage Mime, “Cleaning Grandma’s Attic”: performed by Cole Goos and Kathryn Wild (Large Group State Contest performer) Public Address, “Stand Up For America” by Beth Chapman: performed by Cydney Rose (Individual State Contest performer) Solo Musical Theater, “Climbing Uphill” from The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown: performed by Alyssa Christopher (Individual State Contest performer) OneAct Play, “When Shakespeare’s Ladies Meet” by Charles George: performed by Ashley Moore, Alyona Strohbehn, Sadie Walton, Maddison Wild, Brittany Yates, Shelby Yates (Large Group State Contest performer) Since Speech includes SO many events, the Sunday show consisted of nearly completely different events from Friday.
