Dean D. Sams, 88, of Gladbrook, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014. Funeral services for Dean D. Sams, 88, of Gladbrook, were held at Monday, March 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook.  Visitation was Sunday, March 23, 2014, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., also at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook.  The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Dean and his family.  For more information visit:, or call 641-844-1234. Dean was born in Clark County, Iowa, on April 22, 1925, to parents, Bert and Vesta (Wilkens) Sams. He attended elementary school in Clark county until moving to Marshall County in 1938. Dean graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1943. Dean married Gladys Hoing on May 27, 1944. They briefly lived in California, where Dean worked as an assistant manager on a large dairy farm. After returning to Iowa, they were involved in farming for 14 years before becoming a salesman for Moorman’s Feed Company. Dean also sold Conklin Products for a number of years. Dean and Gladys settled in in the Gladbrook area in 1960. Dean was involved in supporting the local 4-H and FFA programs, as well as many community organizations, including Toastmasters, and Gladbrook Lions Club, receiving the distinguished Coleman Award. He was also a past-president of the Gladbrook Town and Country and Eastbrook Apartment organizations. Dean was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ, where he served on the church board for many years. Dean is survived by his loving family: Donald (Joann) Sams, McKinney, Texas; Steven (Carolyn) Sams, Simpsonville, South Carolina; Linda Terbl, Conroe, Texas; and Pamela (John) Fleming, Gladbrook, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren. Also surviving Dean are brothers, Clifford of Beaman, Iowa; John of Hendersonville, North Carolina; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Hoing of Marshalltown. He will also be missed by his long-time friend, Barb Walton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding Dean is death were his loving wife of 56 years, Gladys; and his brothers: Everette, William “Bill”, and Lloyd.
