In starting this letter it is a very hard time for all of us in the Gladbrook Community as we share with Ed and Kathy Ohrt and the whole Ohrt family in the loss of Noah. All of our thoughts and prayers are with them at this hard time. Noah was a great young man and will be missed by all. Congratulations to the boys basketball team on their excellent run and almost making it to the State Playoffs. And also to Alyssa Christopher and Sadie Walton on their trip to the State Speech contest and to all of the other GR students who have represented their school and both of our communities in many ways. You have all continued to grow into fine young men and women and we are all very proud of each and every one of you. On March 13 Elmer Mussig will be 100 years old. Happy Birthday, Elmer and have many more! In the last month we have had two businesses change owners on Main Street. Michelle Gauthier has sold her tanning business to Heather Warren. Welcome to Main Street and good luck in your future business. Also after 50 years of business in the Gladbrook community, Keith and Lucy DeWitt have decided to retire. Keith started out doing TV and radio repairs in their home for 5 years when Lucy told him to get a store. For the next 45 years they were a part of Main Street and were very active in our community. Thanks to both of you for your dedication to Gladbrook and the best of luck to you in retirement. Dennis and Barb Smith are the new owners and will continue running the business as it was in the past with a lot of new ideas. Thank you both for choosing to become a part of Gladbrook. It is great to see all of the new young business people on the south side of Main Street from Annie Stocker on the east end to Deb Osborn on the west end and everyone in between. Let’s all help out the Gladbrook businesses and keep Gladbrook “Alive and Growing”. I know a lot of you folks in Gladbrook and the surrounding area are wondering what is going on with the new fire and ambulance building. Here is an update. About two weeks ago we received 7 or 8 bids for the construction of our new building ranging from $875,000 to $1,250,000. The fire and ambulance volunteers thought the bids were all well out of line and recommended to the city council to reject all bids which the council did. We instructed the architects to redraw the planning with all the extra frills removed and to rebid the project. Those bids are to be turned in by March 18. The size and shape will be the same and the general public will not see a different. This was a good experience for all of those working on the project. The young men in the community worked hard and studied the plans to see what was needed and what was not. I think they did a very good job of redoing the building and I’m sure it will come in at a lot better price and still be completed by October 15, 2014. I will keep everyone posted. At our council meeting on March 10 the council was given the 2014-2015 budget. With the city’s valuation going down, the recommendation was to raise the millage 20 cents. Before anyone gets too excited about this raise, remember that last fall when you received your new valuations from the County Assessor most of you have gone down in valuation. The 20 cent raise which will amount to $20 on $100,000 house will cover some of that lost revenue. I have been asked to remind everyone that there is hospital equipment available to anyone who needs it free of charge. If anyone has a need, please call Jeanne Paustian. Also remember that when you have a problem with streets or city government, call me. Please don’t call or ask Lori or Mark after hours. It is my job to contact them with any concerns. In closing Jo and I would like to invite all of you to our open house celebrating 50 years of marriage on March 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Gladbrook Memorial Building.
