Garwin Fire Department receives grant

March 13, 2014

Farm Credit Services originally awarded our Fire Department a grant for $2000.00 towards the purchase of Grain Bin Extrication equipment (similar to the grant award previously received by the Gladbrook Fire Department). The equipment will be used by Fire Departments in the event that a person becomes entrapped in a grain bin (either on the farm or at a coop). It allows for extrication without the need to cut or disassemble the bin. Subsequently, the Garwin Fire Department is receiving the supplemental $600.00 grant award to purchase additional gear necessary for Grain Bin Extrication (ropes, ladders, etc.) which is sold by the same company. Since the equipment purchased by Garwin and Gladbrook is from the same company (and Tama County has countywide mutual aid), in the event that either Garwin or Gladbrook is involved in a grain bin extrication event, the assisting department will be able to provide their equipment and it will perfectly match the other department’s equipment. This allows for doubling the area of extrication.
