The Gladbrook Auxiliary was honored to host the 95th Birthday celebration of The American Legion and welcomed a good group of veterans to the festivities. A table full of good food was served by Maxine Bottema, Cindy Eggers and Terri Luehring. Auxiliary President Jeanne opened the party with all reciting the pledge and prayer was offered by Chaplain Joyce Swangel. She introduced Ellie Stoakes and her mother as our special guests. Ellie gave an enjoyable account of her week at Hawkeye Girls State as our representative in June of 2013. Kendra Vavrock has been chosen to represent Unit #127 this summer. Americanism chairman, Lisa Reinhard gave us a report on her yearly Americanism projects, introducing us to puppet Eddie the Eagle and telling of her experiences with the kindergarten, 4th and 5th grade students in G-R. The Junior members help her with programs for Opening Day of School, Flag Day and Veterans Day at Westbrook. Commander Terry Schmitz told of moving the large granite rock from Grant Strohbehn’s field this past week to the Memorial Park. It will be set later, and we want to also thank Benda Bulldozing and Schmitz Construction for the use of their equipment and expertise. Terry accepted a $1000 donation from Terry Luehring and the Corn Carnival Corp to use as Gladbrook becomes the home for the Tama County Freedom Rock. Commander Terry accepted the traditional birthday cake from President Jeanne as we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to our Legion members. Rev Barb Muhs lead us at the piano as we also sang our service songs and recognized each branch of service. We extended appreciation to those Auxiliary ladies who painted the kitchen and cleaned in the Memorial Bldg last week. They were: Joyce Swangel, Jolene Denbow, Louise Ulch , Kay Purvis, Maxine Bottema, Marilyn Carstensen, Pat Clausen, and Chris Hickman. We also want to thank Roger Sievers and Dick Denbow for helping with the painting. The Legion is busy at the floors this week. Announcements: Tama County Government Day is Wednesday, April 9 at the Reinig Center in Toledo with a special presentation by Iowa Supreme Court Justice Brent Appel at 1:15pm. Escorts should be at the Center by 8am that morning. Our next Auxiliary meeting will be at 2pm at Westbrook Activity Rm on Monday, April 14. Hostesses will be Marcie Knaack and Kathy Herink.
