he Tama County Board of supervisors, Larry Vest, Kendall Jordan and Dan Anderson, voted to change the date of next weeks meeting from Monday, February 17 to Tuesday February 18th. This is due to the 17th falling on the Day Washington’s birthday is observed. The Board of Supervisors held a canvas of the special school election, with no changes made. The election was held last Tuesday, February 4th. Monday, March 17, 2014, was set for a public hearing of the County Budgets. More than one option will be presented to the supervisors to study and decide which one to go to the publishers. The budget published cannot be reduced after publication. There has been discussion about joining the North East Iowa Response Group. This is a group of counties that would like to have the capability of working with the Water Fire Rescue and their support personnel and equipment in the event of a hazardous substance emergency. This would be effective July 1, 2014, and would include the counties of Allamakee, Black Hawk, Bremer, Butler, Chickasaw, Grundy, Hardin, Howard, Poweshiek, Tama and Winneshiek and is a 28 E Agreement. The board voted unanimously to join this group. In other business County Engineer Lyle Brehm reported the county’s supply of salt has dwindled and they are now blending sand with the salt before spreading the mixture. Brehm says this is not a cost saving issue but will stretch the use of the salt. Brehm said the county had used nearly 3200 ton of salt this year, believing this is the most he has used in any winter up till now. Claims for the past week came to $150,183.37.
