FFA Feeds Local Families

The National FFA Organization has charged its affiliates to Fight Hunger through its initiative, Fighting Hunger Starting at Home, and is hoping to deliver 1 million meals or meal equivalents to those in need, by our National Convention at the end of October 2014. The Gladbrook-Reinbeck FFA decided to do their part this holiday season. With the help of Trunck’s Country Foods and one Anonymous donor, the GR-FFA packaged 7 meal boxes to be delivered to families in the Gladbrook and Reinbeck Communities. Families were hand selected by a school employee who specializes in the area. Each package contained: 1 loaf of bread, 1 gallon of milk, 1 lb of butter, 1 8-10 lb frozen turkey, 5 lbs of potatoes, 1 frozen vegetable, 1 frozen pie, and about 25 lbs of fresh fruit. Darren Trunck worked with the FFA to provide packaged ingredients at cost and the FFA purchased all packages and used left over fruit from our annual fundraiser to finish the packages out. The G-R FFA is always looking for ways we can make a difference in our home and community, just like it says in the FFA Creed Several members of the G-R FFA officer team boxed all of the packages the Friday before Christmas and the boxes were delivered that evening. We realize that not everyone of us is as fortunate as others during this time of year. The FFA hosts several fundraising events throughout the year and this is just one example of how those funds may be used. Certainly, our number one use of those funds is spent to send students to local, regional, and National camps and conferences. However, we feel it is very important to return some of those monies right back here to the communities that have supported us so well in recent years.
