As we are still in the beginning of a new year I stand in amazement of the people that have already broken their resolution, that admit they don’t make resolutions and those that feel the new year is a brand new start. Well in some ways there is truth to that and yet, as I get older I realize that there are many times throughout the year we are called to start anew. Each and every day we faced with something new. So far this year, I have encountered newness in unexpected ways. The death of an uncle, friends from college that have been in touch as their parents have been transitioning into new living environments, cancer diagnoses for some of the parents who used to visit us at college and end up taking not just their child out for dinner but all six of us that were inseparable. Yes, there new things that have been challenging for all of us since the beginning of 2014 and yet, in the mix of all of that there are words from scripture that offer us comfort and courage. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Do not be afraid - I am with you! I am your God - let nothing terrify youI will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.” Reflecting on these words I am reminded of the many times God has been with and continues to be with me, with all of us in our lives when we aren’t sure of what the future holds. I admit there are times when daily events around us and in our world can be scary but we are reminded that God is with us and provide for us, even in our scariest moments. In the moments when we feel alone and lost. Some of sing songs to remind us of God’s presence and comfort so I turn to John Michael Talbot who sings in his song. “I go before you always. Come follow me, and I will give you rest. May each of you find rest on your journey and strength from our God who is an awesome God! Happy New Year!
