Santa’s Helpers! Time to Make Popcorn Balls!
December 6, 2013
Members of the Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary spent Mon, Nov. 25th, making popcorn balls for the Santa sacks. It has been a long-standing tradition in Gladbrook that popcorn balls are including in the Santa Sacks. The Gladbrook AMVET Auxiliary started the tradition shortly after World War II. The Gladbrook Commercial Club sponsors the 400 Santa Sacks. Inside the sacks are M&Ms, candy canes, apples, popcorn balls, theater buck, and peanuts. The peanuts are donated by Iowa Builders. The apples are donated by the Grundy Memorial Hospital. LSB donates the popcorn and oil. The Gladbrook Women’s Club fills the sacks and, of course, Santa Claus distributes them to the kids at the Gladbrook Tree Lighting with the help of the Gladbrook Young Women. Santa also makes his rounds to Westbrook Acres in December. Sacks are also distributed at the December Senior Citizens Dinner. Helping make the red “balls” were: Front Row (l-r) Joyce Bern, Marilyn Carstensen, Louise Ulch, and Jodi Betts. Back Row: Beth Fulster, Sue Koster, Jolene Denbow, and Darrell & Jeanne Paustian.
