Gladbrook-Reinbeck students perform “Bye-Bye Birdie”

November 28, 2013
By: Betty Dahms , Northern-Sun Print

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck Performing Arts students under the Drama Direction of Ellen Johanns and Music Direction of Amanda Bridges exploded on to the stage in the Tony Award winning two act musical "Bye Bye Birdie" on November 7, 9 and 10.

Agent and songwriter Albert Petersen played by Aaron Shouse, finds himself in trouble when hig-thrusting rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie, played by Tyler Pierce, is drafted into the Army. Albert's secretary and girlfriend Rose Alvarez, played by Sadie Walton, comes up with a last-ditch publicity stunt to have Conrad Birdie record and perform a song before he is sent overseas. Rosie makes Albert promise to give up the music business and to start teaching English at a school. Their plan is to have Birdie sing Albert's new song "One Last Kiss" and give one lucky girl from his fan club a real "last kiss" on the Ed Sullivan Show. The lucky girl chosen randomly is fifteen-year-old Kim MacAfee, played by Alyssa Christopher, from Sweet Apple, Ohio. What ensues is a mad-cap weekend of teen-age girls catching up on the lastest gossip, jealous boyfriends, annoyed parents, and the quaint little town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, turned up-side down with the presence of Conrad Birdie.
