Another beautiful fall day welcomed the Gladbrook Auxiliary to the Westbrook Activities Room for its Education Month meeting, on Monday, October 14. We saw many of our members, and friends from other Units as well as friends from our community come to see what the Auxiliary does. The Monday afternoon meeting opened with the pledge and prayer by President Jeanne. She introduced Sue Koster, our Education Chairman, who welcomed Shawn Halloway the new G-R superintendent as our speaker. He introduced us to the cooperative Iowa Core program which focuses on reading and math in the second grade so all students in the area schools learning programs are similar. He told us about the Western Outreach Center located north of Grundy Center, staffed by master’s degree teachers from G-R, A-P and GC with fill in positions from Hawkeye with that cost coming from the participating schools. D-NH is also in this group. Junior and Senior students may attend classes there or at the participating schools to receive graduating credits both for high school and college. He estimated 50% of the seniors graduate with some college credits. RTI (Response Team Intervention) is used in the lower elementary where students may work in groups according to the level they understand a problem. It is important to catch learning problems early to avoid ‘drop-outs’ later on. He received many questions from the group. Jeanne explained some of the Auxiliary programs that help in our schools as well as Tama County Government Day. Roll call was answered by 4 officers. The secretary’s report was read and approved. No treasurer’s report. A note was read from Ralph and Irene Alvestad of Story City. Jeanne told of the National Awards Gladbrook received: National Americanism Program for Juniors, Lisa Reinhard; Americanism Certificate, active participation in Dorothy Pearl Americanism Contest, Lisa Reinhard; National Junior Activities Plaque for best overall Junior Activities Program, Jeanne Paustian; Security Military Support Certificate, outstanding program supporting military families by Central Division; Unit Poppy Award Certificate, Best Poppy Program in Central Division. The Sewing Day Committee was pleased to take 68# of rolled carpet rags to the IVH for their rug looms. Jolene thanked the Unit for help/furnishing at the Maintenance Ham Ball Dinner on Sept 29. Sue, Katy Grimmius, Marcy Knaack and Jolene helped Jeanne serve 44 senior citizens on October 11. The Juniors started their year with a potluck in September and their first meeting last Sat am (Oct 12) at Westbrook to make turkey favors for the Westbrook residents Thanksgiving. They also filled 19 shoe boxes for the “Operation Christmas Child’ project. If anyone is interested in donating items(toys, books, socks etc ) that fit in a shoe box for a boy or girl, age 2-14 or cash for postage, take to PUCC by Nov 1. Jolene has made tote bags for “Make a Difference Day” to be taken to VA Clinics for children’s use. Mattox Krull celebrated his 2nd birthday on October 3 with a gift from the Junior Auxiliary. Sue Koster and Karen Pieper will also be taking Mattox, and his mom out for lunch to celebrate as well as mom and dad’s anniversary. Kyle has now received orders that he will not be coming home from his tour in Korea until next July. The Auxiliary is planning a Christmas Care Package for him with any donations to be to Jeanne by November 15. We are reminded to vote in the city elections on November 5. Our next meeting is the Veterans Day potluck at 6:30pm on November 11 at the Memorial Bldg. Legion officers have been invited and a program is planned. The Kids Shopping Day is planned for Saturday, December 14 at Peace Church. Any volunteers please call Karen Pieper. The Third District Fall Conference will be hosted by Vinton with the Auxiliary meeting at the Wesley UMC with 8am registration and 9am meeting on Saturday, October 26, 2013. The meeting was adjourned with all singing ‘God Bless America’. A delicious pumpkin dessert was served by JoAnn Roupp and Claire Handorf.
