Mark Your Calendar for the GMG Fall Concert by Scott Rockne The GMG High School is having a fall concert at the high school on Tuesday, October 22, from 7:00pm-8:30pm. Come and enjoy the band directed by Mr. Dan Lostafka. He is an excellent music teacher and the band always sounds amazing. You should also come and see Mrs. Mullikin direct the vocal music department. She is an outstanding vocal music teacher as well. So, remember to come out to listen to all of the good music from the students and mark your calendar.

ACT Testing Information by Jacy Johnson Registration for the September 21, 2013 test date for the ACTs is closed. If you are interested in taking the ACT test’s the next registration deadline is September 27, 2013. The next test date is October 26, 2013. The fee for the ACT test with no writing $36.50 and $52.50 with the writing part of the test. If you are looking into the taking the ACT tests you will want to make sure your parents are notified and you are registered before the deadline.

Homecoming Parade by Anna Scheidel Homecoming is fast approaching. This means dressing up, voting for homecoming court, and a parade. This years theme for the parades is Soup. 7th through 12th grade with be showing off their creative abilities to judges, in hopes of their float being named the best. The parade will start at 2:45 pm on Friday, September 20th. The 7th graders will line up in front of Robert and Pat Ebrect’s house. The 8th graders will line up in front of Mark and Deb Polich’s house. The 9th graders will line up in front to of Jim Helton’s on Rider St. The 10th graders will line up in on Anna St., in front of Theron and Doris Wilkerson’s house. The 11th graders will line up in front of Tom and Lorrie Waite’s house. The 12th graders will line up opposite of Anna St., in front of Lyle Lorensen’s house. Good luck to all the students who worked diligently on their floats with themes about soup.

MG Parent-Teacher Conferences By Kendra Savage GMG will be holding its parent-teacher conferences on September 25th. Conferences will be held from 4pm to 8pm. Conference meetings will be held in the teachers’ rooms. Come start off the year right and see how classes are going for your child! Hope to see everyone’s parents there!

Map Testing for GMG! By: Shannon Brown We had NEWA Map Testing for GMG the week of Sept 9. Map testing is not very fun, but it is a good way to educate kids, and see where they rate in standard testing. We have a certain time for each map test. The time would be from 30 mins to 1 hour. Last Monday was the first day of map testing. On Monday 7-11th did the reading test. On Tuesday 7th-11th did the Science test. On Wednesday 7-11th did the Language test. Then on Thursday 7-11th did the math test. On Friday if someone happened to miss a map test then Friday was the day they had to make it up. Hopefully, our students tried their best on these tests!

Spanish Club by Hunter Smith The GMG Spanish Club will be a club, where you can practice speaking Spanish, listen to music from Spanish speaking countries, eat food from Spanish cultures, and watch movies in Spanish. An Informational meeting was held Thursday, September 5, during lunch. Spanish club is for everyone, and you don’t have to be in Spanish to join Spanish club. Ms. Leslie Preston, our new Spanish teacher, will be sponsoring this fun club. Join in; enjoy the fun!

ACT Reminder for GMG Students by Chad Plaehn The fall ACT testing will happen soon in Marshalltown. You take this test at MCC. If you have not signed up, you must sign up immediately, or else there will be a late fee. The testing date is September, 21. If you have any questions you should contact Mr. Mike Pierson at the GMG High School.

The GMG Dance Team to Perform by Camden Barnes The GMG High School Dance Team has a lot of spirit. They are a joy to watch and show a lot of enthusiasm. They dance every halftime during every home football game. They are wonderful and when they dance they’re always on beat. Their next dance is at our home game on Friday, Sept. 6. They practice so hard to do so well. I hope to see you guys there and to show your support for the GMG dance team and the other football activities of the evening!

Art Club By Ryan Larson At 3:45, on September 4, there was a pizza and drink party for those interested in Art Club at GMG. Ms. Johnson would be more than happy to see any one and every one who didn’t attend the meeting, come and join in the fun. Art Club will discussing some projects and activities that they might do this year. Also, she will see if there are certain things the students will want to do in the club. Some things she wants to do will be decorating the windows for homecoming and designing and painting a mural at the elementary. Students will also experiment with screen printing. They will design a stencil that will then be transferred onto a t-shirt that students can wear around the school. So, if you want to join a creative, exciting club, join the GMG Art Club!

GMG Cross Country Team By Camden Barnes The GMG Cross Country Team is back and better than ever. They ran pretty well at Pine Lake last Thursday, September 5, 2013. It was a really difficult run, and we stuck with it and pushed through till the end. We have 3 Seniors(Logan Burt, Josh Raymond, and Tyler Thurston). They are all very good runners. We have 2 Juniors(Jeff Hughes and Camden Barnes). These young men are looking forward to a great season!

School Board Election by Eric Lada The GMG School Board Election was held Tuesday September 10, 2013. The people running for this council were as follows: Ann Jackson for District At Large, Pat Cornwell for District At Large, Jeana Clough District At Large, Jon Espenscheid for District At Large, Bill Backoff for District 1, and Kevin Bovenmyer for District 2. There will only be one person chosen to be District At Large. Next week, we will announce the winners of the new GMG School Board. Hopefully, everyone from the community was out and voting.

A NEW KID IN TOWN by Trenton Geiken Victor Puckett is a new student at GMG High School. Previously, he attended BCLUW High School. He has enjoyed the transition and is happy that he chose GMG for his senior year. Victor is seventeen years old, and he has three sisters and one brother. In his free time, he likes to skateboard and hang out with friends and family. He also enjoys playing video games a lot. He is looking forward to the rest of the year, and is excited to graduate with the class of 2014! Welcome, Victor, to GMG!

GMG Vs. Cedar Vally Christian By: Chris O’Neal On Thursday, September 5, there was a close match between GMG and Cedar Valley varsity volleyball girls. The exciting game was held in Garwin. They played 2 matches. The first game was 22-25 and the second was 25-27. Cedar Valley won both. Abbie Duden contributed two digs and one ace. Caitlin Appelgate really carried the team with one solo block, two digs, one ace, and one kill. Good effort girls!!

GMG Volleyball Faces BCLUW by Hunter Smith The GMG Volleyball girls faced BCLUW for their first volleyball game of the season. The game was held in Garwin on September 3rd. It was a tough round of competition and BCLUW won all 3 games. Round 1 the score was 17-25 GMG lost; Round 2 score was 6-25 GMG lost; and Round 3 10-25 GMG lost. These are the highlights of the game Olivia Barritt contributed 4 kills, 4 solo blocks, and 5 digs.Mackenzie Burt added 1kill and 1 dig. Abigail Dude also added 1 kill and 1 dig. Caitlin Appelgate pulled in 2 aces, 1 solo block, 3 assisted blocks, and 1 dig. Mikaella Koster assisted with 2 assisted blocks, 1 assist and 11 digs. Payton Mannon contributed 2 assisted blocks and 6 digs. Summer Langenbau chipped in 1 dig, and Jennifer Borota grabbed 24 digs. The girls played hard, and hopefully, they will see some wins this season.

GMG’s 2013 Homecoming Court By: Summer Langenbau At a pep rally on September 6, GMG’s 2013 Homecoming Court was announced. The freshman attendants are Katie Airey, daughter of Diane Shulz and Steve Airey, and Austin Cox, son of Amy and Brad Cox. The sophomore attendants are Chelsea Hurd, daughter of Lisa and Michael Hurd, and Blayne Koster, son of Darlene and Gary Koster. The junior attendants are Kenna Krier, daughter of Angie and Keith Krier, and Cesar Castillo, son of Sheri Castillo. The junior attendants are Drayke Dvorak, son of Ashley and Luke Dvorak; Nickon Savatdy, son of Khamla Soukhavong; and Rhianna Murty, daughter of Erin and Steve Murty. The queen candidates are Jennifer Borota, daughter of Becky Borota and Kent and Shiela Borota; Summer Langenbau, daughter of Heidi and Dale Langenbau; Codi Groth, daughter of Lee and David Groth; Jacy Johnson, daughter of Kristie and Jim Johnson; and Caitlin Appelgate, daughter of Jane and Merle Appelgate. The king candidates are Dillon Slingluff, son of Cindy and Keith Slingluff; Austin Vaughn, son of Sheri and Scott Vaughn; Brock Fisher, son of Shannon and John Fisher; Gage Fraser, son of Traci Fraser and Shawn Fraser; and Lucas Catherwood, son of Roxanne Catherwood and Larry Catherwood. To vote for each attendant and candidate each class takes a vote on who they want to be representing their grade. The whole school votes on who it is they want for king and queen. Coronation will be on September 18, 2013 in the old high school gym at 7 PM.

Girls Cross Country by Chris O’Neal GMG’s Cross Country season has begun! The girls first meet was Thursday, September 5th. Natalie Smith from GMG ran for the Wolverines. She started off strong and ended the race with a time of 19 minutes 47 seconds. She placed 31st out of 81 runners. Good job, Natalie! We are looking forward to seeing more dynamic running from the cross country team this year!

GMG Volleyball Tournament by Chad Plaehn GMG is hosting a volleyball tournament on Saturday, September 14. The tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. It is going to be a round robin tournament. The teams that are going to be playing are as follows: Waterloo Christian, BGM, HLV, Valley Lutheran, and GMG. Come and support our GMG Wolverines!
