GMG Student Teacher written by: Anna Scheidel Miss Alison Matney has decided to join the GMG family for a short amount of time. She has taken the position as student teacher with Mrs. Julie Upah and Mrs. Andrea Samek for eight weeks. Then she will be working with the junior high students. The staff is glad to see her here, and when it comes time, they will be sad to see her go. They hope she has a wonderful time and learns all that she can, so that one day, she will enjoy her own classroom. Miss Matney went to BCLUW and graduated in 2009. She continued her education at Marshalltown Community College for two years before going to the University of Northern Iowa. While in high school and college she loved to tutor, and those experiences led her into the teaching profession. She is currently a senior at UNI and will graduate in December. She one day hopes to become a teacher at a small school. Maybe one day she will be working at GMG High School full time.

Welcome Ms. Preston! By Kendra Savage Here at GMG we would like to welcome Ms. Preston, the new Spanish teacher, to our school! Ms. Preston grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and decided to become a Spanish teacher, because she has been learning Spanish since she was about 5 years old and loved it. She also said her Spanish teacher was “incredible and made her realize, she too wanted to teach Spanish”. Ms. Preston’s favorite subjects in high school were Spanish and Journalism, and her hobbies include: reading, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. Ms. Preston was asked why she chose GMG, and she responded with saying that she likes that it is in Northern Iowa since she is familiar with the area, and it is nicely placed between Cedar Falls and Des Moines. When asked what was one thing she found at GMG that she would not at another school, Ms. Preston replied that, “The atmosphere that GMG has is very unique, not just that it’s a small school, it is unique because of the leadership from Mr. Polich, as well as other teachers and the readiness and willingness to help”. So, welcome Ms. Preston, we hope you have a fantastic school year!

Early Outs And No school By Ryan Larson Here are two of my favorite things about school. This week we are having many early outs due to extreme heat. So far yesterday, Monday, and today we are being released early because parts of the school have no A/C and temperatures are reaching 100+ degrees outside. It is also possible that we may be released other days this week but this remains unknown. Also, Here’s a new announcement for you. We were originally supposed to have and early out next week on Wednesday, September 4, because of a teacher in service. However, this has been canceled because of the early outs this week. So we will have a regularly scheduled day on the 4th! On a similar note we will be having no school Monday, next week because of Labor Day. This means a three day week end. But this means that these two weeks are going to be short with all of the early outs and no school day. Luckily, we are completing more than half of the day which means that it counts as a full day. Also on a similar note, the teacher in service was moved from next week to Aug. 28, so the teachers could get their in-service in!
