Garwin Modern Homemakers

July 22, 2013
Northern-Sun Print
Nine members and one guest drove to New Hartford, Iowa to the home of Lois Stork, on Tuesday, July 9. We met and had lunch in the 107 year old farmhouse that she had moved from it's former location to her farm. Karen Johnson and her sister Laura made our lunch and catered it to the farmhouse. They live a mile from Lois and are very good friends. The menu was Caesar salad, creamy chicken parmesan, duchess potatoes, pound cake with fresh strawberry sauce, and ice tea. It was very good. After lunch we had roll call by Kathy Thurston. Her question was, what is your best and worse traits? Answered by 9 members and l guest and also by Lois. Lois also told us around her farm that round-up was her best friend and ask if we had anything better that we used in our gardens and yards. Lois had the Fairfield Township #5 one-room school house and 138 year old Fairfield Chapel moved to her farm also. She is currently restoring all these buildings. She took us on a tour of the farmhouse, the school.the church, the barn, and a morton buillding that was full of things from the past. Our final stop was a country cemetery 1/2 mile away, with some very unique and unusual and very old grave sites. It was a very hot and humid day but very interesting. Lois was a gracious hostess. Next month Donna Tichy is hostess at her home, Roll call by Shirley Lewis, and Program by Janet Abbe.
