State Large Group Music Contest By: Shelby Yates

On Friday, May 3rd, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School Band participated in Large Group Music Contest at Grundy Center High School. Large Group Contest is broken down into districts, and schools participate in this event once a year. At Contest, you have 20 minutes to perform whatever music selections you have chosen and prepared. However, each band director is sent a list of music, and you must perform a music selection from that list The Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School Band performed “Kentucky—1800” by Clare Grundman and “Blue Ridge Saga” by James Swearington. “Kentucky—1800” was our selection from the required list, which we recently performed at our Spring Concert on April 30th. “Blue Ridge Saga” is one of the band’s favorite pieces. We played this piece back in March for our Parade of Bands Concert, and have been mastering that music selection since. At Large Group Contest, the band performed in front of three critic judges. Similarly to Solo/Small Ensemble Contest, the judges rate you on a scale from 1-5 (5 being the best) in every area of concern. At the end of the performance, the judge adds up every number rating to give you an overall division rating. The areas of concern include: tone quality, intonation, rhythm, technique, interpretation/musicianship, articulation, and other performance factors. We are unbelievably astounded and proud to announce that the Gladbroook-Reinbeck High School Band received a Division I rating at Large Group Contest—the first in 15 years! That’s right, the last time the G-R Band received a Division I was in 1998! Not only does this make us as the band think differently about our program, but we hope that it’ll help our community realize that we are growing and improving, not only as individual musicians, but also as a fine arts program. This success has made us realize that we are not defined by our size, but by the hard work we put into making wonderful music! We all are very excited for the future of our band, and this has given us a great boost to keep improving.
