Thursday evening Andrea Rowe spoke to the Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board about the upcoming trip to Washington DC for 7th and 8th graders. There will be 32 students, six parents and 3 staff members, Rowe, John Olson and Coach Dave Buskohl on the trip. Plans are to leave by bus to Cedar Rapids on June 3rd and fly to DC out of Cedar Rapids, returning home June 5th. While there they will travel on a private tour bus that will take them to all the sites they want to visit. Cost of the trip is approximately $11,000 and the students have raised most of this money on their own. Dani Crozier and Rod Brockett spoke on behalf of the Fine Arts Booster telling board members of their plans to purchase 30 new band uniforms. The current ones are 20-25 years old. The students picked out the style and these uniforms will be machine washable. The cost is approximately $11,000 with the students having fund raisers and the Fine Arts Booster paying half of the remaining cost. As it takes about four months to get, plans are to order these early next year and will have them available for the summer parades and the football season in 2014. The final decision will be made at a later date. Under the consent agenda, a student teaching contract with UNI was approved, as were the resignations accepted for Sara Jansen, 7th-8th grade teacher at the middle school who will be moving to Missouri, Brooke Mahr as secretary at the Gladbrook campus who will be moving with her family this summer and Kathy Cowell as special education associate. An early graduation request was approved for Haley Eastholm to graduate at the end of the second trimester during the 13-14 school year. Conditional approval of graduates for 2013 was approved in the consent agenda. This year there are 39 seniors. Ariel Patton was hired as high school guidance counselor with 15 days extended contract. She is currently working part time as an admissions counselor at UNI as well as being involved in a number of different counseling opportunities around the Cedar Valley. Victoria Duvall was hired as 5th-6th Language Arts Instructor. She is currently teaching at Johnston Elementary. Board approved the certified staff contracts for 2013-14 as well as the non-teaching salaries and non-teaching contracts for 13-14. All received approximately a 2.99% increase. The hours for the nurses was increased from 4/day to 5.5/day. Substitute teacher pay went from $96.02/day to $98.00/day. School fees for 2013-14 will remain the same accept for the kindergarten milk program. For the 1st or 2nd semester it increased from $30 to $35 and for both semesters will be $70. Home usage fee for 1:1 will now include 5th - 12th grades. As was discussed last month, the nutritional fund will be operating in the red at the end of the school year so lunch and breakfast prices as well as a la carte for 2013-14 will all increase by $ .50. Extra milk increased by $ .05 a carton. Although the board approved a later start to the school year for 2013-14 to August 21st it is still prior to the date established in the Iowa Code so the district applied for an early start waiver. There were a number of resolutions to approve for the $1,225,000 general obligation school capital loan notes from the PPEL bond. Bankers Trust Company of Des Moines will serve as paying agent, note registrar, and transfer agent. The notes have been delivered to Robert W Baird & Co of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and have been paid for in accordance with the terms of the loan agreement at a price of $1,228,713.87 and accrued interest. The Course Description Handbook was reviewed but the board found some changes that need changing so will be approved at a later date. Helen Adair was hired for those students who need credit recovery. The program will run from June 3rd-June 21st and will run Monday through Friday from 9 am - noon. Mrs. Adair will be paid $15/hour. The board approved the lease purchase agreement for the Middle School 1:1 initiative between Apple, Inc and the G-R District contingent on the LanSchool being included. The purchase price is $198,493.70 to be paid over four years. The board approved a contract with Eldora-New Providence to provide English as Second Language services. The district currently does not have any ESL students but are required to have a certified teacher should the need arise. Cost of the contract is $500. Principal Matt Leeman said he continues to work on scheduling. Leeman and Supt. Tim Kuehl attended ALICE training in Des Moines. Leeman said it was an eye opener for both of them and made them aware that this type of training needs to be utilized at G-R. Leeman said he has had conversations with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and plans are to meet with them towards the end of May to discuss potential plans of action in the instance the school was to ever have an Active Killer situation. He said next year the district will teach with several samples to determine which program best aligns with the Common Core and the district’s instructional needs. Spring MAP testing will be done during the weeks of April 22nd through May 3rd. The goal with this assessment is to compare with data from last fall. 5th Grade Orientation will be held Friday, April 26th from 10 am - noon. This will give 4th grade students a chance to tour the building, meet their new teachers, eat lunch and have a question and answer period with the student council.
