GMG students prepare for Battle of the Books

March 22, 2013
Northern-Sun Print
Avid readers from GMG junior high and high school are preparing to compete in the Battle of the Books by reading and studying 40 select books from varied authors, genres, time periods, and cultures. It’s a big task, but two teams of students are working together to collectively read the titles—meaning each student reads a portion of the list. However, some students undertake the daunting task of reading all 40 books prior to the regional competition. Members of the junior high team, “BOB” are: Austin Cox, John Glasscock, Conner Stonewall, Theron Gale, McKensie Vaske and Kyla Wilkening. Members of the high school team, “The Literators” are: Joey Stabenow, Chris Lothe, Jeff Hughes, Anna Scheidel and Shawna Hughes. The junior high team members will attend the regional competition at Area Education Agency 267 in Cedar Falls in April. They will compete on short answer and oral tests. The competition requires persistence and study. Teams work together for months to prepare for the event, building friendships and collaborative work skills. A guest author provides a program between the written and oral rounds, and the winning team has lunch with the author. Medals are awarded for first, second, and third places. The high school team took an online test on March 14. The test included a multiple choice question for each book on the list. Discussion among team members was encouraged before selecting an answer. The top 16 high school teams by score on the multiple choice test will be invited to Marshalltown High School on April 16th to compete in the Oral and Grand Battles. Win or lose, both groups of students have gained valuable knowledge, exercised their brain and, hopefully, had fun! Good luck to both teams as they await their results in Battle of the Books!
