20 yrs. ago March 19, 1993 Erin Aalfs, daughter of Michael and Marlene Aalfs, Gladbrook, has been selected to represent the Gladbrook Auxiliary Unit 127 at Girls State in June. Erin is a junior at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School. Gladbrook Lions Club member, Loren Luethje, was presented the Warren Coleman Honorary Award. Loren Luethje has been secretary-treasurer of the Gladbrook Lions Club for 33 years. 30 yrs. ago March 18, 1983 Kris Thoms was selected to attend Girls State at Cedar Falls, June 4-11. Kris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Thoms. Tami Mallisch is the alternate. Tami is the daughter of the Gordon Weatherlys. All are from Garwin. Janeen Chamberlain, the new 1983 Iowa Pork Queen, was given a reception in her honor by the Tama County Pork producers and Porkettes, Sunday, March 13 at the lincoln Amvet Hall, Lincoln. This is the first time a girl from Tama County has received this honor. 40 yrs. ago March 23, 1973 Miss Nancy Schulz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schulz, Maxwell, became the bride of Donald R. Lubbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lubbert of Gladbrook, on Sunday, March 4th. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Maassen are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, March 21. She weighed ten pounds and fourteen ounces. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Maassen are the paternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Horstmann are the parents of a daughter, Cindy Jo, seven pounds and eleven ounces, born Monday, March 19. She has a brother, Michael, and two sisters, Carma and Carol. Mrs. Toni Horstmann is the paternal grandmother. 50 yrs. ago March 22, 1963 The Evangelical Student Nurses Chorus of the Evangelical Hospital will sing at the Peace United Church of Christ on Sunday, March 24. Linda Viering and Vivian Thede from Peace Church are members of the 53 member chorus. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Beattie of Gladbrook became the parents of a daughter Monday. 60 yrs. ago March 20, 1953 The Gladbrook Chevrolet and Buick Agency will be known as McMahill Chevrolet in the future as Rex McMahill of Creston has purchased the agency and took over the business on Monday of this week. Mrs. Mayme Arnold of Marshalltown announced the engagement of her daughter, Betty Lou Arnold,to Thomas Frericks, son of Mrs. Matie Frericks of Gladbrook. The wedding date has been set for June 21st. 70 yrs. ago March 19, 1943 Pfc. Clarence Haack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Haack, who live west of Gladbrook, was reported missing in action by the government. Clarence was participating in the North Africa campaign and it is thought that he might have seen action along with many other Iowans who were reported missing in engagements of February 17th and 18th. This is the first local boy reported missing in action. A Green Mountain boy, Cpl. Fred A. Naylor, has been listed as missing in action in the North African campaign. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Naylor of that place. Mrs. Bess Wilson has resigned as principal of Gladbrook schools and has accepted a government position at Charles City. Mrs. Meyer who was principal of the high school here for many years succeeds her for the remainder of the year. 80 yrs. ago March 24, 1933 Last Wednesday, Hilton Gloe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gloe of this city and Miss Genevieve Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Williams, living one mile southwest of Reinbeck, slipped over to Galena, Illinois, and were united in marriage. The high school Glee Clubs of the Gladbrook public schools and their instructor Miss Michaelsen, went to Tama last Thursday night where both organizations were entered in the county contest. Both clubs placed fifth in their respective classes.
