Mildred “Darleen” Thede, 92

Mildred “Darleen” Thede, 92, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Liberty Commons Care Center in Burlington, North Carolina, where she had resided since 2006. Ms. Thede was born on Dec. 23, 1921 in Albia, Iowa, to Edith and Absalom Turner. She  lived in the Albia and Des Moines, Iowa area until she married Elvin “Al” Thede in 1954. They farmed five miles east of Gladbrook on the Thede family farm until they retired in 1974.  They traveled to Brownsville, Texas for several winters until they made their permanent home there in 1976. Ms. Thede was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lorraine Smith, and brother Russell Turner, two grandsons, Scott Grossnickle in 1977 and Joshua Grossnickle in 2010. She is survived by her two sons, Robert Leroy Grossnickle of Minburn, Iowa, and James Richard Grossnickle of Mebane, North Carolina, four grandchildren, Jamey Grossnickle, Jori Pike, Jacee Grossnickle, and JoDel Wright, thirteen great- grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. A graveside memorial service will be held at Crystal Cemetery near the family farm in June.  Memorials may be made in Mrs. Thede’s name to the Liberty Hospice Services, 2563-Eric Lane, Burlington, NC 27215 who helped care for her in her last months.
