GMG advances four groups to Large Group State competition By Coach Margaret Thomsen
January 25, 2013
GMG Large Group Speech Team performed in District Competition at Pella High School on January 19. There were nine entries and GMG earned four I Ratings to qualify them for State. The State Contest will be at Cedar Rapids Kennedy on February 2. We began our day with an Improv with Kenna Krier, Jeff Hughes and Ryan Spurlin. Their scenario was “Ice fishing in the spring time.” They earned a II. Radio Broadcasting WPA 95.7 with anchors Olivia Welton and Peyton Mannan were up next. Codi Groth was the live reporter from an accident scene and Allison Stegman was the meteorologist. Bryce Newcomb was the sports reporter and Codi Groth and Noah Thurston advertized the “Prom Boutique”. Summer Langenbau presented “Getting Fit” for the feature. They earned a I. The junior girls’ Improv with, Jenny Borota, Caitlin Appelgate, Mackenzie Burt and Abbie Duden drew “Buying groceries and you cannot see”. They brought home a I to advance to State. The Senior Reader’s Theatre, “A Wish Come True” was delightfully presented, but earned a II in the eyes of the judge. Members performing were: Alix Hesmer, Allison Stegmann, Ryan Spurlin, Codi Groth, Ella Groen, Jeff Hughes, Logan Burt, Olivia Barritt, Olivia Welton, Peyton Mannan and Summer Langenbau. Kenna Krier joined forces with Noah Thurston to perform an ensemble acting, “Anybody Want My Sister, Again”. Despite the fact that Kenna was very ill, the duo gave a performance for the crowd to enjoy. The earned a II rating. WBGS 104.6 Radio broadcasting team earned a I rating with their “very professional” (judges’ quote) team and will head to State. Team members included Dillon Slingluff and Logan Burt as anchors. Meteorologist Luke Wrage, Sports reporter Ella Gruen, Matt Smith advertizing “Pet Vet” and special feature Olivia Barritt. Abbie Duden, Mackenzie Burt, Jenny Borota and Caitlin Appelgate joined forces to present an Ensemble Acting, “Granny Rocks and She Can Charleston, Too.” This is a fun little story of three prom shopping girls who rope Great Granny into joining them to shop. They will perform at State. Seven freshman students recorded a Radio Broadcasting. Their station, KCCA 106.9 featured anchors Josh Gruen and Chelsea Hurd. Shauna Hughes was the live reporter and Anna Scheidel was the Meteorologist. Korey Sederburg dreamed up the “Tent in a Bag” for the commercial. (The judge says he wants to be first in line to purchase one!) Cole Langenbau poured out the energy as the Sports Anchor. The news concluded with an energy savings report by Cassie Schultz. Our day ended with the freshman Reader’s Theatre, “The Original Mother Goose”. This is a satire based on all the actual violence in the famous Mother Goose rhymes. Performers included: Cole Langenbau, Josh Gruen, Korey Sederburg, Anna Scheidel, Cassie Schultz, Chelsea Hurd and Shauna Hughes. The team and coach extend a big thanks to all who came to support us and watch our performances. It is so much easier to perform with an audience. See you all at Kennedy on February 2.
