January 25, 2013
Northern-Sun Print
Alpha Study Club met on January 8 at the home of Avriel Koester. President Deb Wentzien opened the session with a reading by JoAnna Fuchs titled “The To-Do List of Life.”  For the roll call, 15 members shared what they were looking forward to in 2013.  The secretary’s reports from November and a brief report from December were read.   The treasurer reported a current combined balance of $305.51.  Both reports were approved. Deb thanked the Social and Program committees for a fun time at the Christmas meeting.   Martha Gamble expressed her appreciation for those who have given her nativity cards for 2013 Kids Shopping Day gifts. Her work will be ongoing, and she will welcome more cards for this project at any time.  With no new business or correspondence, Pat Clausen of the Program Committee introduced Kathy Herink, who traded places with Pat Goos.  Kathy’s presentation of Anna Quindlen’s “Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake” helped members relate to and appreciate the ebb and flow of women’s stages of life.   In this irresistible memoir, the “New York Times” bestselling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize Anna Quindlen writes about looking back and ahead—and celebrating it all—as she considers marriage, girlfriends, our mothers, faith, loss, all the stuff in our closets, and more. From childhood memories to manic motherhood to middle ages, Quindlen uses the events of her life to illuminate our own.  Along with the downsides of age, she says, can come wisdom,  a perspective on life that makes it satisfying and even joyful.  Candid, funny, moving, LOTS OF CANDLES, PLENTY OF CAKE is filled with the sharp insights and revealing observations that have long confirmed Quindlen’s status as America’s laureate of real life. Deb closed the meeting by showing members how to close the gap between 1 and 3 in 2013 (13 = B) to make 2013 the Best. Alpha Study Club’s next meeting is scheduled for Marge Grove’s* home on January 22, 2013. Avriel served a delicious dessert, Penny’s Cheese Cake, nuts, and drinks, during and after which the members enjoyed a pleasant social time.  Pat Clausen, Secretary pro-tem *Subsequent to the meeting, the next session of Alpha Study Club was changed to Emma Moeller’s home.
