The Gladbrook Legion welcomed a new year, the Auxiliary, all new members, the local fire departments and the G-L Ambulance crew to an appreciation soup supper this cold, but nice evening on Monday, January 14. Prayer was offered by Lynn Steiert and Bob Knaack always does an excellent job with his oyster stew and chili. We all extended our thanks to our community volunteers who give of their time to serve us here in Gladbrook. Each organization then convened for our regular meetings. Due to the ‘flu’ several members were unable to attend and their reports will be given at a later date. The meeting was called to order by President with the Pledge and prayer by Chaplain Joyce. Four officers answered roll call. The minutes were read and corrected and correspondence received with a thank you from the Bill Tessaus for serving their 70th anniversary and from the Kyle Krull family for their Christmas gifts and dinners as we have chosen them as our military family for the year. They presented us with a large box of cookies and candy which we offered with the soup this evening. The treasurer’s report was given. Jeanne reported that the a large group of Juniors enjoyed their Auxiliary gift of a movie and gift exchange at the City Center on January 2. A special showing of ‘Return of the Guardians’ was shown for them. Ellie Stoakes has been chosen as our Girls State representative this summer at SUI in Ames. Karen Pieper and Jeanne took Kristin Krull and Mattox out for lunch at the Uptown for their Christmas to open the many gifts brought for them by the Juniors and the Auxiliary. It is hoped her husband will be able to join us for a meeting in February or March while home for a while. VA & R chairman, Pat Oettchen is planning on sewing days at the Memorial Bldg on Thursday and Friday, January 17-18 starting at 9am. We have plenty of materials ready to sew and need machines and volunteers ready to roll and ball the strips for the carpet makers at the IVH. Bring scissors and a can of soup (not cream) for the pot and enjoy the fun. These denim rugs last forever and are a nice gift for $6 from the IVH gift shop. Group 4 and 5 will be assisting with the Third District Conference to be held here in Gladbrook on Saturday, March 23. Further plans will be made at the February meeting on the 11th. We hope the group chairman will plan on attending to get up to speed on plans. Lunch committee for the Feb meeting will be called by Tammi Oettchen as we will also be serving the Legion. With no further business the meeting was adjourned.
