20 yrs. ago Dec. 25, 1992 The Lincoln Commercial Club sponsored a Santa Day December 19 at the Lincoln Fire Department. Approximately 30 children attended a sing-a-long, a movie with pop and popcorn and later a visit with Santa. Each child got a goodie sack. Saturday, December 19, Santa made an appearance in Garwin at the Garwin Legion Hall. Many youngsters came to him with their list for Christmas Day or just to see Jolly Old Saint Nick. The Garwin Community Club sponsored the event and drawings were held for Little Girls’ Christmas Stockings, Little Boys’ Christmas Stockings and for three turkeys to dress the Christmas dinner table. Garwin’s Annual Lighting Tour winners were: $25 first place winner was Joe Parks; $14 second place winner went to Dale Akers; the $10 third place was a tie between the Lawrence Kahlers and the Harvin Langenbaus. Gladbrook Lighting winners were: Religious-1st, Methodist Church; 2nd, Orville Brekke; 3rd, Dale Meyer. Beauty & Design-1st, Stan Goos; 2nd, Les Engel; 3rd, Roger Gardner. Originality-1st, Marvin Crumley; 2nd, Chris Rickett; 3rd, Westbrook Acres. 30 yrs. ago Dec. 31, 1982 Gladbrook Lighting Contest winners were: Religious-Peace Church, Methodist Church, Richard Verwers, Clarence Storjohann and Alfred Thomsen; Beauty & Design-Darrell Paustian, Loren Mehaffy, Howard Casebolt, Mark Goos and Larry Miell; Originality-Joe Landt, Wm. Schneider, C. D. Parsons, Lee Ulch, and Kenneth Strohbehn. 40 yrs. ago Dec. 22 & 29, 1972 Mr. and Mrs. John S. Livingston are the parents of a five pound ten and a half ounce daughter born Friday, December 15. She has been named Sarah Jean. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Herman T. Holmes of Newton and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Livingston of Monroe. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoffman of Holland announce the engagement of their daughter, Rhonda Grooms, to Albert Hein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Hein of rural Gladbrook. The wedding will take place on May 26th. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Humke of Ackley announce the engagement of their daughter, Charlene Faye, to Darwin Beichley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Beichley of Gladbrook. The couple plan a July 28th wedding. Saturday, December 16 at 4:00 p.m. wedding vows were exchanged by Jacqulyn Boldt of Toledo and Stanley R. Goos of Gladbrook at Salem Church in Lincoln. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Boldt of Toledo and Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Goos of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Kroeger of rural Gladbrook announce the engagement of their daughter, Debra, to David McGowan, son of Mrs. Marilyn McGowan and the late Donald McGowan. The First United Methodist Church of Gladbrook was the scene Saturday, December 16 of the wedding service of Miss Marla Koester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Koester of Gladbrook and Klaus Jarr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Jarr of Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Mehaffy announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Linda Kay, to Charles Edwin Moehring, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edwin Moehring, Sr., of Minnesota. A May 27th wedding is planned. Mrs. Daniel (Donna) Brady, 23, of Charles City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Halverson of Gladbrook passed away Tuesday, December 26 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, from a massive cerebral hemorrhage, suffered 9 hours earlier at a family Christmas gathering at the Larry Boomer residence near Traer. 50 yrs. ago Dec. 21 & 28, 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Donald Storjohann of Marshalltown are the parents of a son born Monday, December 24. Miss Gloria Lage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lage, of Gladbrook, became the bride of Edward Hardon, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hardon of Tama on Saturday, December 22 in the Peace United Church of Christ. Snow that started on Monday and continued through Christmas Eve and into the night dropped that blanket of white over Gladbrook and most of the state provided the traditional “White Christmas”. With only 3-5 inches in most places, the snowfall was certainly not as severe as the one at this time last year when 14-15 inches were recorded in parts of Iowa. Christmas night and Wednesday morning saw the mercury nearly hit the bottom as unofficial lows of 20 to 25 degrees below zero were recorded here in Gladbrook. 60 yrs. ago Dec. 19 & 26, 1952 Carl O. Eilers this week announced the election of Emmett Street as Worshipful Master of the local Masonic Lodge for 1953. Other officers that will hold office during 1953 are; Senior Warden, Richard Bott; Junior Warden, Elmer Eilers, Treasurer, A. H. Hoppe; Secretary, Carl O. Eilers. Wilbur Lorenz was named Commander of the Gladbrook Amvet Post no. 80 Thursday evening, Dec. 11, at their regular election and Loren Luethje was named Vice Commander. Other officers for the coming year are: Adjutant, Lynn Reinhard; Finance Officer, Evan Goos; Provost Marshall, Loren Pieper; Judge Advocate, Jack Jindrich; Trustees, Jack Jindrich and Irvin Goos. 70 yrs. ago Dec. 18 & 25, 1942 The whole community joined in making the blackout a success Monday evening. Carl O. Eilers, local air raid warden, stated Tuesday, that only minor violations occurred and there was only one or two of those. The farmers cooperated 100 percent and no lights were on in the county. At a special Christmas program sponsored by the Lincoln Township Farm Bureau in connection with the No. 9 School of Lincoln Township, Harry Dahms was elected Chairman for 1943 and will represent Lincoln Township on the County Board of Directors. 80 yrs. ago Dec. 16, 23 & 30, 1932 Gladbrook High School and Green Mountain High School basketball teams battled it out on Friday, December 9 at Green mountain, Gladbrook winning the second team game 27-19 and Green Mountain taking the first team 31-16. Barger and Platt were both high point men for Gladbrook’s second team and Schroeder for the first team. A new 4-H Club has been organized in the county during the latter part of December. The Crystal Pioneers, which has for their leader Lawrence Putney of Gladbrook; Delmar Thede, Gladbrook, President. Earl Lyon, Vice-President; Elvin Thede, Secretary-Treasurer; and Eldon Wiese, news reporter.
