G-R High School Students work on Habitat homes
December 13, 2012
Eight groups work over a span of several weeks Students from Gladbrook Reinbeck High School have been volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Waterloo. Students and staff took a day off from traditional class time to help families in need. Students work at several different sites around Waterloo. The work they did included soffit and facia on a garage, “capping” the floor on a new foundation, landscaping, seeding, building porches and hanging drywall. “These kids worked very hard” says Construction Supervisor Victor Wiles “All the students had an open mind about learning a new skill and jumping into the work needed to be done that day”. Gladbrook Reinbeck Principal Matthew Leeman says it’s more than just volunteering. “For our students it teaches them about giving back to others. For our staff it helps the students to see them in a different light and it helps increase relationships as well. It’s been a great experience for all whom have been involved”. Feedback has been positive from the students and they have asked to volunteer again for Habitat next spring. About Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and is a nonprofit organization seeking to eliminate poverty housing, build stronger families and improve neighborhoods. IHHFH currently builds in three Iowa counties – Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler. Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build homes with families in need of better housing. Locally, Iowa Heartland Habitat completes 10-12 homes annually. Houses are built with volunteer labor, homeowner Sweat Equity hours and tax-deductible donations of money and materials. The Habitat houses are then sold to Habitat families with affordable ZERO interest mortgages. These mortgage proceeds are then used by the Habitat affiliate to build more affordable homes with more qualified families. Visit www.heartlandhfh.org. Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity has completed 110 homes to date.
