GMG Elementary collects for Food Pantry By Margaret Thomsen

The first and fifth graders at GMG Elementary sponsored a food drive for the school. The two classes are partnered throughout the year on different projects. This one was designed to collect non-perishable items for donation to the Food Banks in Marshall and Tama County. There were 865 items collected from pre-school through sixth graders and staff. With the fifth graders helping the first graders, a part of the learning was for the students to count the donated items into groups of 100 and then into small groups of 10. More counting took place as the items were put into boxes for distribution. Classroom teachers are Mrs. Jane Smith and Mrs. Shelly Taylor. As a special treat, if the students brought a donated item, they could wear their pajamas to school for Pajama Day on December 7. The children really enjoyed this fun day. More important, the children learned that Christmas is not always about receiving.  There is joy and satiffaction in giving and helping those less fortunate.
