Visit to the All Veterans Memorial
November 19, 2012
On Thursday November 8, Dick and Jolene Denbow welcomed Marcia Koester and Holly Fleshner’s third grade history classes to the All Veterans Memorial as part of their lesson on Gladbrook history. The sun was shining, but the temps were chilly as they listened to a short history of the many men and women who have served during wars since the Revolutionary War that freed us from English rule, up to the peace keeping efforts of today as American fights all over the world in the war on terror. Dick explained the names on the granite memorial as those men who had given their lives during those wars so we may enjoy the freedoms of America. Mrs Koester pointed out the name of her husband’s uncle who was a POW during WWII. Students were anxious to see if they could find the name/brick of a relative who is remembered among the over 800 bricks displayed on the memorial tables. The military flags were explained and they will be flying this Veteran’s Day week in honor of those veterans from the community who have died this past year. The students were reminded to greet servicemen and women with a handshake and thank them for their service as they heard that ‘Freedom is Not Free’.
