The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Veterans Day Program at Westbrook Acres on Sun., Nov. 11th. Americanism Chairman Lisa Reinhard was in-charge of the program. Pianist Sue Koster got everyone into the spirit by playing a medley of patriotic music Lisa began the program by welcoming everyone and especially our veterans and their spouses. She stated “I don’t think we need just one day to celebrate, we need to thank our veterans every day. Lisa stated, “On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War. Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the next year.” She continued by telling the story of how Veterans Day became a federal holiday. While pianist Sue Koster played “America” everyone joined in singing the very familiar hymn. Lisa gave a brief history about the five military branches, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. After each veteran was announced by Auxiliary President Jeanne Paustian, they received a poppy corsage. Jr. Auxiliary member Stella Betts carried the poppy corsages in a white basket and Lisa did the pinning. Westbrook veterans included: Harold Arnold, Dr. Robert Gamble, Duncan McMartin, and Loren Luethje. Also present were Lynn Steiert and Homer Ross. The military songs were song by all present.
