The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Veteran’s Day potluck to honor our Veterans and express our thanks for their service on Monday evening, November 12 at 6:30pm. Special guests included the Department Vice-Cmdr Brent Wightman of Waverly representing the Department Commander Lyle Schaeffer, Third District Commander Dennis Richards of Marshalltown, and Tama County Commander Wilford Yuska of Traer. After a great meal, President Jeanne Paustian introduced our program for the evening. Judy Robb of Traer gave an inspiring presentation on stories involving ‘Old Glory’ and the inspiration this national symbol has given to so many as they have served to preserve our freedoms. Americanism Chairman Lisa Reinhard told of the history behind each branch of service as Sue Koster led the group in their military songs. Poppy chairman Jodi Betts and junior members, Maya Goos, Stella Betts and Third District Junior president Kendra Vavrock honored each veteran with a poppy boutonniere. Jodi was also presented with her Central Division Poppy Award for 2012. Commander Terry Schmitz introduced his officers and our guests as each gave their thoughts and plans for coming events. Vice-Commander Wightman brought greetings from the Department Commander and accepted a monetary gift for the Commander’s project of improvements to the Department office in Des Moines. Christmas fruit boxes will be packed for our Veterans by Carroll Wegner and crew. Our next Tama County meeting will be Tuesday, November 27 at 7pm at the Tama Post with a memorial service for all veterans and unit members lost this past year. President Jeanne introduced her officers and told of coming Auxiliary projects. The Auxiliary will be making popcorn balls for the Santa sacks at 9am on Monday, November 26, Group #3 will be serving the 40&8 on Wednesday evening, November 28, the IVH gift shop is December 4 & 5, Kids Club Christmas Shopping at the Memorial Bldg on Saturday Dec 8 along with the Lion’s Soup Day. We will also be serving the Senior Citizens at the City Center Festival of Trees on Friday, December 14. Our next meeting will be a joint Christmas 6:30 supper (food furnished) with the Juniors providing their annual Christmas program. The meeting was closed with all standing and joining in God Bless America.
