20 yrs. ago Sept. 25, 1992 Pastor Bruce Zimmermann, Wellsburg, has assumed the duties of minister at Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook. He is also the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Wellsburg, and vacation pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Eldora. Paul Koester was the lucky winner of the Football Tailgate Package given by the Gladbrook Commercial Club as the September promotion. Paul and his family will enjoy tickets to the UNI vs ISU football game this weekend at Ames. 30 yrs. ago Oct. 8, 1982 Susan Parks, daughter of Merle and Carol Parks and Wade Welton, son of Gaylyn and Janice Welton, were crowned the 1982 GMG Homecoming Queen and King. National 4-H Week runs from Oct. 3-9. The theme this year is “4-H Pathways to Progress.” The week marks the beginning of a new 4-H year. 40 yrs. ago Oct. 13, 1972 Marcia Pieper, senior, was crowned the 1972 Gladbrook Homecoming Queen at half-time of the game with Dike last Friday evening. The G.H.S. Freshmen took first place in the float competitions for the Homecoming Parade with their theme, “Beat the Bobcats.” Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A. Walton are the parents of a daughter born at 3:03 a.m. Tuesday, October 10. Miss Janet Niedermann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Niedermann of Gladbrook and James Cannon, son of Harlan Cannon of Colfax and Mrs. Howard Long, Whitten, were married Friday, September 22, at Salem Church in Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Thomas, Texas, are the parents of daughter, Nicole Renee, born October 10. Mrs. Thomas is the former Shirley Frericks of Gladbrook. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frericks of Gladbrook and Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Thomas of Marshalltown. 50 yrs. ago Oct. 12, 1962 Gladbrook Panthers added one more to their football record by beating Wellsburg 38-13 last Friday night on the local field. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jindrich are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday morning. She weighed 8 lb. and 11oz. and has been named Karen Isabell. They also have two sons. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Delfs are the parents of a girl last Thursday, October 4. She weighed 11 lb. and 12 oz. and has been named Barbara Kay. At press time this wee, the solicitation of funds toward the new Fire Station and library renovation had hit $10,200 on the thermometer, lacking only $1,800 of the $12,000 estimated to complete the project. Fire Chief Lester Schade announced that the ground-breaking would commence at the earliest possible opportunity of the contractors. Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook will observe its 75th Anniversary for the next two Sundays, Oct. 14 and 21. Special services will be held each Sunday with former ministers taking part. A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Harms Tuesday. He weighed 6 lb. and 13 1/4 oz. and has been named Christian Lee. 60 yrs. ago Oct. 10, 1952 Woltz Studios of Des Moines this week announced the winners of their annual midwest Cutest Child Contest for 1952. Leora Sue Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt R. Thompson of Gladbrook was chosen the cutest girl. Louis Pieper, 70, was found dead in his smoke-filled farm home about 3 1/2 miles southeast of Gladbrook about 11 a.m. Sunday morning by his nephew, Harold Pieper. Harold had stopped at the farm to deliver his uncle’s Sunday paper and see if there was anything he wanted when he discovered his uncle’s badly burned body in the kitchen at the home. It is believed by the County Coroner, Harvey Jones, that Mr. Pieper suffered a heart attack and died while smoking a cigarette, The cigarette evidently ignited Mr. Pieper’s clothing which resulted in the fire. His clothing was almost completely burned. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Roland Dahms has accepted the Explorer Advisor position for the local Boy Scouts. Two fourth quarter touchdowns let Maxwell trip the Gladbrook Panthers in a Midstate Conference game at Maxwell last Friday night, 13-0. 70 yrs. ago Oct. 9, 1942 James Engel, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Engel, has joined the Coast Guard. Prior to this he has been working at Moline, Illinois. Ivan Gethmann left Saturday night for Roswell, Texas, where he will attend an advanced flying school. He took his preliminary training at Mt. Vernon. 80 yrs. ago Oct. 7, 1932 Fred Wrage, a well known retired farmer and Mrs. Marie Hladek, were quietly married at the Evangelical parsonage in Lincoln, Wednesday evening at 7:30 o’clock.
